Libraries' Responses to Survey Results:
Facilities

Lighting, Temperature and Custodial concerns in the UCSD Libraries.

The UCSD Libraries rely on the campus department of Physical Plant Services (PPS) for all building-related facilities needs, including custodial services. The Library has been working closely with campus PPS to insure prompt responses to our needs as well as timely routine maintenance of building equipment. A long-term decline in overall funding UC systemwide has stretched resources very thin.

Each of the individual Libraries has varying facilities' needs due in part to size, location on campus, usage and age. A balance has to be maintained between efficient energy use, collection preservation, equipment capacities (heating and air conditioning), and overall outside conditions, in order to maintain a comfortable environment for everyone. With many of these variables constantly changing the balance can sometimes be troublesome to maintain.

Lighting...

Physical Plant Services along with SDG&E and local lighting vendors, have begun working together to provide more reliable and energy efficient lighting systems for the Libraries. A team of representatives are scheduled to begin meeting this Spring. We are hopeful that major repair and replacement work can begin in Library locations as early as late '97.

Temperature...

Library staff as well as PPS staff have attended indoor air quality workshops in order to improve temperature and humidity controls for the Libraries. An electronic network linking together most of the campus buildings' HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems has been installed to assist PPS staff in responding to and correcting trouble areas regarding heating and air conditioning. This relatively new system is helping PPS better monitor and control the campuswide Library spaces.

Custodial...

The Library has begun a series of meetings with the off-campus vendor contracted by PPS to provide custodial services for the Geisel Library. Improved communication with regard to academic schedule and peak use periods has helped anticipate heavy use. Efforts to increase funding in order to provide seven-day-a-week custodial service for the Libraries are underway with PPS.

If at anytime you have a concern or would like to comment, please let the library know. It's important to drop a note in the library suggestion box or talk directly to a staff person about your concerns. We take comments, suggestions and concerns seriously.

It is the goal of both the UCSD Libraries and Physical Plant Services to provide a clean, safe, and comfortable place for everyone to do research and study.
