PROVENANCE The Revelle Papers are made up of six separate accessions that were transferred to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Archives from 1985-1991. The papers in this collection were from Revelle's offices at home, at SIO, and at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) campus. The accession number, quantity, and original location are listed below. Accession # Quantity Incl. dates Origin 85-27 (1 carton) 1967-1979 From RR's SIO office 87-22 (2 cartons) 1946-1962 From the Revelle's guest bedroom 87-30 (6 cartons) 1974-1985 From RR's office at SIO 90-24 (18 cartons) 1950-1990 From RR's office at the UCSD campus 91-20 (20 cartons) 1940-1991 From RR's office at home 91-26 (25 cartons) 1976-1991 Taken from RR's office at Scripps at the time of his death The papers were deeded to the Scripps Archives by Revelle's wife, Ellen C. Revelle, on December 31, 1992. The earlier accessions were deeded by Roger Revelle on March 13, 1984. ARRANGEMENT Files from the six separate accessions of the Revelle Papers were brought together, combined, and arranged into nine series: Biographical Correspondence Organizations University of California, San Diego Subjects Writings, Speeches, and Publications Writings of Others Calendars, Addresses and Telephone Memo Records Audiovisual These series generally correspond to the series arrangement in the Scripps Archives Revelle Collection number MC6, with several additional series, but without a Harvard series. Files relating to Harvard University are located in the Organizations Series. The original order has been maintained whenever possible. However, Revelle's filing system was not consistent for the various office locations and over time. For example, in one accession, letters of recommendation and nomination were filed by individual's name, and in another accession filed chronologically by year. Files have been combined to create a single comprehensive series or subseries whenever possible. Revelle often kept two or more separate files for the same topic at different locations. This often resulted in duplicates and some overlap of dates within different folders. The separate folders were combined and items within folders interfiled into chronological order. Duplicates have been weeded out and discarded. The final accession (91-26) included ten cartons of papers that were found in loose piles in Revelle's office at SIO at the time of his death. These papers consisted of correspondence, manuscripts, reports and various other materials. The loose papers were sorted and interfiled into appropriate series and folders by the processor. Folder titles have been enhanced when necessary for clarity. Additions to titles and titles created by the processor appear in brackets on the folders. Items with post-it notes were photocopied and the post-it notes then discarded. The copy appears in front of the original document. Faxes, newsprint and other acidic paper has been photocopied and the original discarded unless deemed to be of special value. Legal and oversized documents are housed at the end of the collection. Documents from folders that have been moved to legal or oversize boxes are indicated on the container list. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Revelle papers date from 1929-1991, with the bulk being from 1978-1990. The collection provides extensive documentation of Roger Revelle's career at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UCSD Department of Science, Technology and Public Affairs. Although the papers do contain materials dating back to Revelle's early career, they provide particularly strong documentation for the years after Revelle returned to UCSD from Harvard. For more complete documentation of Revelle's early career at UCSD and at Harvard Center for Population Studies, see the Revelle collection MC6, in the SIO Archives. This collection also provides strong documentation of Revelle's professional activities outside of UCSD. The Organizations Series, the largest series in the collection, contains many files relating to Revelle's affiliation and service in a large number of local, national, and international organizations. Documentation of Revelle's Naval service is also provided. Navy Personnel records are housed in the Biographical Series. In addition, the papers contain some documentation of Revelle's participation in Pacific bomb testing in the 1940's and early 1950's. These files are located in the Subjects Series. The Revelle papers contain many documents pertaining to Revelle's interest in the relationship of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to global warming. His dedication to this issue is evident throughout the collection. A particularly rich source of documentation is the Organizations Series. The Subjects, and Writings, Speeches and Publications Series also contain important documentation on carbon dioxide and global warming. Also abundant in this collection are files representing the large body of writing Revelle produced in his career, including a typescript of Revelle's first important paper, "The Solubility of Calcium Carbonate" from 1934, and drafts of the 1957 paper with Hans Suess, "Carbon and Carbon Dioxide." These are found among many other manuscripts and transcripts in the Writings, Speeches and Publications Series. The Revelle collection also includes copies of manuscripts and papers written by others. These are filed in the Writings of Others Series. Published writings of others collected by Revelle were listed and then separated from the collection. The Revelle papers MC6A does provide some documentation of Revelle's personal life and family, but of a limited nature. The Correspondence Series has some letters to family members and personal friends, as well as some correspondence relating to personal finances and leisure activities. SERIES DESCRIPTIONS BIOGRAPHICAL SERIES The Biographical Series contains materials dating from 1929 through 1991, with the bulk being from 1979-1991. The subseries are arranged alphabetically, and chronologically within folders. Included here are autobiographical notes, biographies and interviews of Revelle dating from 1979 to 1990. Also included is an annotated 1985 transcript of an oral history of Revelle conducted by Sarah Sharp of the Regional Oral History Office, Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley, about the Office of Naval Research. For the other volumes, please see Sarah L. Sharp, Oceanography, Population Resources and the World: Oral History Interviews with Roger Randall Dougan Revelle, 1986-1988. The Biographical Series provides ample documentation of coverage of Revelle by the media from 1940-1991. These materials are located in two different subseries: "Clippings re: Revelle," and "Publicity." Also in this series are personnel documents relating to Revelle's service in the Navy from 1936-1956, and his academic appointments at UCSD from 1979-1988. The Biographical Series contains many documents relating to Revelle's awards, honorary degrees, and certificates of merit and achievement. Many of these items arrived at the archives in frames. Certificates, diplomas, and other framed documents were removed from them and filed. Decorative wall plaques were separated from the collection. CORRESPONDENCE SERIES The Correspondence Series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence dating from 1939 through 1991, with the bulk being from the 1980's. This series is split into two subseries, "General" and "Personal." The Personal Correspondence Series was maintained by Revelle's office from 1939-1976. In general, both subseries relate to Revelle's professional career, with the main distinction between personal and general correspondence being that the personal correspondence contains letters relating to Revelle's professional activities outside of the University. Subsequent to 1976, all correspondence was filed under one chronological heading. This arrangement has been maintained, although separate correspondence files from the various accessions were combined. All loose correspondence was interfiled in the "General" subseries. Revelle had one separate file of collected letters from Sir Edward Bullard and Dr. Anton Brun, dating from 1960-1979. These are found at the end of the Correspondence Series. Incoming letters are arranged chronologically with Revelle's reply following. Researchers should note that Revelle often waited long periods of time before answering incoming mail. For correspondence relating to Revelle's position as Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, see Records of the SIO Office of the Director, Revelle (81-23), in the SIO Archives. The Correspondence Series contains documentation of Revelle's professional career, as well as civic involvement. The series contains letters to and from such notable individuals as Harald Sverdrup, Carl Eckart, Sir Edward Bullard, Walter Munk, Paul Waggoner, and Thomas Malone, among many others. This series should be used in conjunction with the other series in the collection. Correspondence relating to specific topics or organizations are also filed with other materials in the Subjects and Organizations Series. Likewise, correspondence relating to specific publications, speeches or lectures may also be filed with manuscript materials in the Writings, Speeches and Publications Series. ORGANIZATIONS SERIES This series dates from 1940-1991, with the bulk being from 1977- 1991. Organizations are arranged alphabetically by name of organization and items within folders are arranged chronologically. Organizations files from the various accessions were combined to make one continuous alphabetic arrangement. Larger files are broken into subseries as appropriate. Materials on specific conferences are filed under the name of the organizing body. When the organizing body was not apparent, conferences were filed directly under the name of the conference. This large series documents Roger Revelle's involvement with a wide array of organizations on a local, national, and international level. Local organizations include the La Jolla Playhouse, the San Diego Commission on Arts and Culture, and the Theater and Arts Foundation of San Diego. Files on UCSD are located in a separate series, below. Revelle was active in national organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Of particular interest in the AAAS subseries are files on the Committee on Climate as well as related AAAS materials on carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and its effect on climate change. Revelle was a very active member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The "NAS" subseries contains many files relating to Revelle's involvement in the National Research Council. Of note are files on various boards and committees, including: the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC), the Climate Board, the Board on Ocean Sciences and Policy (BOSP), the Board on Science and Technology for International Development (BOSTID), the Carbon Dioxide Assessment Committee, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program, the Ocean Policy Committee, and the Geophysics Research Forum. Some materials for the above committees, etc., are also found in the Subject Series, "Climate" subseries. On an international level, the Organizations Series includes extensive files on the Indo-U.S. Subcommission on Science and Technology, and the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The "ICSU" subseries provides ample documentation of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), and especially the joint SCOR/IOC Committee on Climate Changes and the Ocean, for which Revelle served as first chair. The CCCO files date from 1977-1991. Revelle was active in the United Nations. This subseries includes files on the Conference on Law of the Sea, and the Conference on Science and Technology for Development (COSTED). It also includes files on the Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Revelle helped to organize a conference on the crisis in UNESCO in 1986. Materials relating to this conference are filed under the "University of California" subseries, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO (UCSD) SERIES The UCSD Series dates from 1939-1991. This series contains files relating to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, although Scripps pre-dates the general campus. The "Scripps" subseries includes files from several expeditions: Gulf of California (1939-1940), Midpac (1950), and Capricorn (1952-1953). Revelle was on the search committees for the Dean of the School of Architecture and the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. Files relating to these searches appear here. Some of the materials in these files are restricted. The UCSD series also contains many records relating to Revelle's teaching duties at UCSD. Class materials including outlines, handouts, and student papers for courses on Marine Policy, Technology and Society, and Technology and the Poor Countries are filed in the "Teaching" subseries. SUBJECTS SERIES This series dates from 1925-1991, with the bulk being from 1979- 1990. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject. Items within folders have been arranged into chronological order. Larger topics are arranged into subseries. This series contains documents relating Revelle's life interest in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and its effect on global warming. These materials are found mainly in two subject subseries "Carbon Dioxide" and "Climate." Also notable in this series are documents relating to Revelle's 1986 fact-finding mission to Africa to examine desertification and possible solutions. The Subjects Series also includes files relating to Revelle's life long interest in India, Pakistan, and Nepal. These materials are filed in a subseries called "Indian Subcontinent." The Revelle papers contained many untitled folders of hand-written notes. Because they are difficult to read, the topic of these notes could not be readily determined. These have been filed in the Subject Series under the subseries "Notes." Notes that were found together remain in separate folders. The folders are arranged chronologically with undated notes first. Another important group of papers appearing in the Subject Series are those relating to Revelle's participation in nuclear bomb testing in the Pacific after World War II. These documents are filed in a subseries called "Pacific Bomb Tests." Included are data, notes and manuscripts relating to bomb tests at Bikini and Eniwetok. These records date from 1946-1950. This series also includes four chapters from an unidentified "handbook" for the Atomic Energy Commission (please see Samuel Glasstone letter, October 13, 1949, Correspondence Series, Box 5 folder 8). Chapters are by Stuart Brinkley, Benjamin Holzman, Edward S. Gilfillan and Roger Revelle. WRITINGS, SPEECHES AND PUBLICATIONS SERIES This series consists of manuscript and typescripts of many of Revelle's speeches, publications and lectures and other written materials from 1934-1991. Some files include several drafts, as well as correspondence relating to a particular writing. These files are arranged chronologically. Undated materials are listed first, filed alphabetically by title. Dated materials are listed by year and then arranged chronologically within the year and alphabetically by title. WRITINGS OF OTHERS SERIES This series was created to include manuscript materials written by other people that were found in the various accessions of the Revelle papers. These writings date from 1934-1991 and are arranged alphabetically by author. Papers collected by Revelle by certain individuals are also filed in the Subjects Series under the individual's name. In addition, references for particular topics are also found in the Subjects Series under the topic name. CALENDARS, ADDRESSES AND TELEPHONE MEMO RECORDS SERIES This series consists of Revelle's calendars dating from 1967-1991, as well as various undated address files. Also here are telephone memo records from his office at UCSD dating from May 16, 1986 to July 10, 1991. AUDIOVISUAL SERIES This series contains audiovisual items of various formats that were scattered among the Revelle papers. Included here are photographs of Roger Revelle arranged in chronological order, with undated photographs appearing first. Photographs identified to be of specific events are noted as such. Also included in this series are all of the slides found in the Revelle Papers. These are also arranged in chronological order. RELATED COLLECTIONS This collection should be used in conjunction with the earlier Revelle Papers, collection number MC6. In addition, many collections at the SIO Archives include material documenting Revelle's life and career. Substantial material on Revelle can be found in the SIO Subject files (81-16), among the Records of the Office of the Director (Vaughan, 81-25; Sverdrup, 82-56; Revelle, 81-23), and among the personal papers of his colleagues and friends, Denis Fox (83-65), Carl Hubbs (81-18), Walter Munk (82-58) and Francis Shepard (84-27). The archives also holds audio recordings of Revelle's remarks before the First International Oceanographic Congress in 1959 (82-3), and audio and video cassette recordings of the symposium in honor of Revelle's 75th Birthday held at Scripps on March 9 and 10, 1984 (84-10) and (84-13). Additional material documenting Revelle's life can be found among the Thomas Wayland Vaughan Papers at the Smithsonian Institution Archives, the Carl Eckart Papers at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress and the records documenting the Hydrographic Office, Office of Naval Research and Bureau of Ships among the records of the U.S. Navy at the National Archives. Revelle's records as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science are housed at the AAAS Archives in Washington. Some of his records as Director of Harvard Center for Population Studies can be found among the records of the School of Public Health at Harvard's Countway Library in Boston. RESTRICTIONS University policy stipulates that certain items--merit reviews, letters of recommendation, grades and any other official documents which evaluate the work of UCSD students and staff--be restricted. Items pertaining to faculty and other staff members are restricted for 50 years after the date of origin, and those describing student work are restricted for 75 years.
