The William Blake Archive

A hypermedia archive sponsored by the Library of Congress and supported by the Getty. Eventually the archive will contain at least one copy of each of Blake's works in illuminated printing and multiple copies of most and include approximately 3000 digital images.

Ditto.com

Ditto.com provides a visual mechanism to search the web using pictures instead of text. Users are directed to the originating web site on which the pictures are located. A search on "temples" found 289 images.

LUCI: Library of UC Images

LUCI is a joint campus project, initially funded by IAPIF, uniting resources from several UC visual collections (this phase of the database incorporates images from the classical Greek and Roman periods only).

San Diego Historical Society Photo Archive

The Booth Historical Photograph Archives of the San Diego Historical Society contains over two million images. These images show San Diego County from the mountains and desert to downtown and the beaches. Dating back to the 1860s, the collection tracks the expansion of the West, the development of the San Diego area, the contributions of various ethnic groups, the geographical formations of the region and the connections between San Diego and Baja California.

Beazley Archive

The Beazley Archive is a research unit of the University of Oxford's Faculty of Literae Humaniores. The original archive of Sir John Beazley (1885-1970), acquired by the University in the 1960's, was installed in the Cast Gallery of the Ashmolean Museum in 1970. In 1979 Information Technology projects began with the Pottery Database of Athenian figure-decorated vases of the 7th-4th centuries BC. Other IT projects include the Classical Gem and Finger-ring Impressions which should be available in 2000.

Ad*Access Project

An image database of over 7,000 advertisements printed in U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines between 1911 and 1955. Covers five categories - Beauty and Hygiene, Radio, Television, Transportation, and World War II.

Public Image Collection from UMI

This site contains 11,291 images from the UM Museum of Art, 566 digital images
of Egyptian amulets from the Kelsey Mus em of Archaeology and images of Borobudur from UM Visual Resources collections.

National Archives and Records Administration

NAIL is a searchable database that contains information about a wide variety of NARA's holdings across the country. You can use NAIL to search descriptions for key words or topics, and then to retrieve digital copies of selected textual documents, photographs, maps, and sound recordings.

The ever-expanding WebMuseum network is now welcoming

California Heritage Collection

The California Heritage Collection is an online archive of over 28,000 images illustrating California's history and culture from the collections of the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Great Buildings Collection
More than 750 great buildings from around the world and across history
are illustrated at this web site with photographic images, architectural drawings,
discussion, bibliography, architect information, and also live 3D models and digital video clips.

American Memory
This collection from the Library of Congress consists of collections of primary
source and archival material relating to American culture and history including
photographic and motion picture collections.

Pictures of Record
Images of archaeological sites and artifacts, techniques of archaeology
and ethnographic subjects, as well as reproductions of stone tools.

Masters of Photography
Contains selected works, articles and resources on 30 master photographers.

Hulton Getty Picture Collection
Hulton Getty is an archive collection containing 19th and 20th century photography.
It is a historical resource and a research tool. The cornerstone of the Hulton Getty
is the picture post collection which embodies everything that is wondrous
about the art of photojournalism, or social documentary as some prefer to call it,
and features the work of pioneering photojournalists.

Cities and Architecture
An electronic photo archive on cities and architecture
that is world-wide in scope. it contains good quality jpg
images, with a formal list of technical information, and is
accessed by a country and site index.

AMICO
The Art Museum Image Consortium (AMICO) is a not
for profit association of institutions with collections
of art, that have come together to enable educational use
of the digital documentation of their collections.

ArtServe
This server, in the Department of Art History & Visual
Studies at the Australian National University, offers access
to around 80,000 images all concerned in some way
with the history of art and architecture, and the great
majority unavailable elsewhere on the Web.

Digital Imaging Project
This impressive site offers art historical images of European
and North American architecture and sculpture ranging from
Classical Greece to Post-modern. There is also a selection
devoted to women architects which includes
more than 60 buildings by Julia Morgan.

and appreciating art history at educational institutions

H.A.A. provides in-depth coverage of architecture, sculpture,
and the decorative arts offering an extensive resource
of images ranging from Pre-historic to Contemporary periods.

Offering 23 million images

Perseus Project
Perseus contains a massive library of art objects, sites, and buildings.
Each has a description of the object and its context,
as well as images. This web site currently publishes over 15,350 images.
The catalogs currently contain 523 coins, 1420 vases, 366 sculptures,
179 sites, and 381 buildings.

Arthur
Arthur is currently under development at the Center for Cultural Technology at the Information Sciences
Institute. Arthur can index and search 30,000 images and associated text of 300 selected Websites
organized into five databases. Images can be retrieved by image similarity, contextual similarity
(text in the Web page near the image is similar), or by keywords in the Web pages.

Archivision
Archivision's archive currently consists of close to 40,000
35mm slides covering more than 1,500 subjects, over 2000 on-line images.
