MISSION Community Advocates for Disability Rights and Education is A UCSD association that promotes full inclusion and equal opportunity for people with disabilities. MEMBERSHIP Membership in CADRE is open to anyone in the UCSD Community who has an interest in disability issues and concerns. REASONS TO JOIN CADRE People have asked why they should join an association designed to appeal to people with disabilities. After all, why would you want to disclose that you are a person with a disability? It could lead to discrimination, pity, uncomfortable glances, or a perception that you need to be protected, right? Yes, due to the current level of ignorance about how normal people with disabilities are, some people experience these responses to their sharing information about this portion of their life experiences. CADRE is an association of people committed to providing education and information about the diverse group of people with disabilities and their talents and abilities. How diverse a group is this? As diverse as the society in which we live. A January 1997 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that more than 45% of Americans (about 100 million) have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, bronchitis, or arthritis. Researchers at UCSF have projected that by the year 2030, the number of chronically ill people will increase to 148 million. Some people indicate that there are only two categories of people; those with current disabilities and those who are temporarily able-bodied. The U.S. Census Bureau indicated that 27% of our 2.5 million residents in San Diego County are persons with disabilities. Since UCSD is such a large employer, many people with disabilities work here. Relatively few of them have self-identified as a person with disability or have joined CADRE. We encourage you to join with us so that together we can educate UCSD faculty, staff, and students about the aspirations, capabilities, and rights of people with disabilities. Individually, each of us may feel that we cannot influence our organizational culture at UCSD. By joining CADRE you will confirm your belief that our organizational climate can be improved and that together we can create an opportunity for talented UCSD community members with disabilities to contribute to the goals of the University. Together we can accomplish great things. |
