Food Policy for Pantries in the Geisel Library
The library has a no food/drink policy for staff when they are working with library materials or when they are in view of the public (see Administrative Manual - Food and Drink Policy). In addition, carpeting and furniture present another issue in the on-going process of deciding where food/drink is appropriate, even when staff are not working with library materials. An attractive Staff Room is available on the first floor, with a large kitchen and seating area. Staff are urged to use this room whenever possible for eating and drinking while in the library, and for departmental parties. If departments have parties in their work areas, these should be held in the departmental conference rooms.
The following guidelines are effective January 1993 for equipping the pantry areas (with sinks) in departments. Department Heads will be expected to take lead responsibility for maintaining the quality and cleanliness of the furnishings and equipment within their departments and for cleaning up other areas of the building if they have been used for departmental parties or events.
Coffee pots, hot water dispensers, refrigerators, etc. are to be located only in the pantries, as space permits. Departments without pantries should locate them in areas out of public view and with concern for safety, carpeting, etc.
Microwave ovens may be located only in pantries. If possible, the pantry or department doors should remain closed. If there is a problem with the HVAC system spreading the odor into public areas and the problem cannot be remedied, then microwaves will be limited to the first floor staff lounge.
No popcorn may be cooked in microwave ovens.
