DEPARTMENTAL AND PRIVATE BINDING
DEFINITIONS
Departmental Binding:
Departmental Binding is done for material to be used and stored within a department of the University of California. This material remains within that department regardless of personnel change. The cost of binding is charged to a departmental account number.
Private Binding is done for material owned by an individual affiliated with the University of California. The material is charged to a departmental account number, but since the material is private property, the individual who requests private binding is expected to reimburse the department for the cost of binding.
POLICY
Departmental Binding
The University of California has two bookbinderies which serve the University of California system. The southern campuses are served by the bookbindery located in Culver City.
Each department or individual should make arrangements with one of the branch libraries listed below for shipment of their material. Shipments are sent to the bookbindery every 2 weeks.
International Relations and Pacific Studies Library (IRPS)
Social Sciences and Humanities Library/Geisel (SSHL)
Medical Center Library (MCL)
Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO)
Departments and individuals must have their processed material delivered to the branch library 3-5 days prior to the shipment date.
Processed material may be taken to the branch library or sent by campus mail, but the arrangements should be made in advance with the bindery preparation assistant in the branch library. The Library assumes no responsibility for material lost by the bookbindery or campus mail.
Prices for binding will vary depending upon the amount of work required to bind a particular volume. Stamping will be done in white unless requested otherwise.
Private Binding
See instructions for Departmental Binding (II.A.)
Permission to have binding charges for privately owned material billed to a departmental account should be obtained from the appropriate staff. Arrangements should be made in advance for reimbursing the department for binding charges.
Material can be returned only to a campus address.
PROCEDURE
Bindery Slips
Bindery Slips are a 3-ply form available from any of the branch libraries (see Exhibit A). One bindery slip is required for each physical volume.
Type the information needed on the front of the Bindery Slip. Capitals are normally used for author and title. The number of physical volumes of each title should be shown in the space in the upper middle of the slip (see Exhibit A).
The information shown in the ``Title'' block will appear stamped in the top portion of the spine. The information shown in the center blocks will appear in the center of the spine, and the ``Imprint'' information will appear at the bottom of the spine. When trying to match a volume previously bound, supply a photocopy of the spine as a sample.
Place the first copy of the completed bindery slip inside the front cover of the volume to be bound and tie the issues together securely with string. Each physical volume to be bound must be tied as a single unit.
Prepare a instruction sheet. Include the information below as well as the number of volumns and brief description. A copy of each of the bindery slips can be attached.
