Writing Assignments

Over the first nine weeks of class, students taking the course for credit must submit five short writing assignments. Each writing assignment should be approximately 2-3 pages in length and should focus closely on the positions and arguments presented in the current reading assignments.

Policies:
1. Papers will be due at the beginning of class each Tuesday (except for the first assignment; see below). Late papers will not be accepted.
2. Taken collectively, these short papers will determine 40% of the final course grade.
3. All students must submit a writing assignment during the first week (due at the second class meeting -- Thursday, April 3). See topic below.
4. The remaining four papers can be submitted during any of the following eight weeks. (Note: no assignments will be accepted during the tenth week of term.)

Some Specific Guidelines:
a) Avoid long windups, historical introductions, etc. Get straight to the work of presenting an analysis of the doctrines and arguments of the article.
b) Use your own words; keep quotation to an absolute minimum.
c) Your paper should include the standard trappings of an essay: title, page numbers and some kind of bibliography or citation apparatus. (Any standard format is fine, as long as it is consistent and provides the requisite information).
d) A premium should be placed on clear, concise, precise, analytic prose.
