The
UCSD Marketing Council
Marketing Council Minutes
Wednesday, May 29, 2002
I. Update from the Chair
Mike is continuing as Chair
for a second term. Tracie Davee as Vice Chair. Nominations are being
accepted for Secretary II.
Open House will be on Saturday,
October 19, 2002. Budget = $80k from Chancellors office with as
much of this as possible being recouped from corp. sponsors by way of
John Valvas organizations fundraising efforts. Note that 10/19/02
is also Homecoming.
Sara Stoddard from Purchasing
volunteered to initiate a negotiation with Clear Channel for radio promos,
billboards, etc. The goal is a UCSD contract rate for all campus departments,
including Health Care and Extension.
II. Next Meeting
Looks like well be
having summer meetings (13 out of 17 voted yes by a show of hands).
Our next meeting will be on the last Wednesday of June, 6/26/02.
III. Discussion of Proposed
2002 2003 Business Plan
Note: Will have a mini retreat
to further refine the business plans (Extension offers a class on Business
Writing. Sarah Huyett-Benson to send the info to Mike). Need to determine
if: 1) the projects are in line with overall UCSD goals; 2) are the
initiatives already underway in another dept. on campus; 3) are there
any opportunities being overlooked and; 4) what are the action items
and milestones for each project.
A. UCSD As A Destination
Betsy McCue
Edie Munk is joining this committee. The committee is in the assessment
stage. Regroup to determine the direction, such as whether or not to
focus on the Visitors Center.
B. Parent Relations
Susan Shiomi-Cobas
Further clarifying this committees objectives. Focus on a Parents
web site is a strong possibility. Attached notes are from a brain storming
session. John Valva met with the Council of Provosts. Provosts want
a rep on the Marketing Council (MC).
Taking steps to ensure this committee is in concert with other initiatives
taking place on campus.
Parent info collecting and database via forms in student acceptance
packages is already happening.
C. UCSD Marketing Resources
Sarah Huyett-Benson
Hand out created a while ago, so may be a bit outdated. All action items
feed into MC web site with goal of strengthening it: marketing.ucsd.edu
Publications is currently developing a photo bank, therefore this committee
will assist Publications by getting some images (Yvonne Muzzy).
Tracie Davee mentioned events.ucsd.edu as a marketing vehicle. Steve
Evans who programs the events site is willing to work with MC on this.
Edie mentioned that for faculty purposes the events site needs some
enhancements. Edie will help with this on this committee. Mike is leaving
this committee to join the K-14 committee.
D. K-14 Maryann
Callery
Assessment stage with action item as creating a web based resource such
that the UCSDs right hand knows what its left hand is doing with
regards to K-14 outreach.
Also writing a grant proposal to obtain funding to market the K-14 outreach
videos.
E. Spirit Committee
Elise Tiregol & Kimberly Eaton
Assessment stage via a survey. Goal is to implement some ideas Fall
2002. Overall objective is to increase campus spirit amongst staff.

the next few weeks. The event is primarily for first year students.
