Charge of the UCSD Libraries Website Committee

The LWC's current responsibilities include oversight of the existing libraries.ucsd.edu website, and effective access to pages about library services, branch libraries, hours & locations, and general library news. LWC also remains responsible for the Sage database of electronic resources, along with the associated author tools which support it. LWC is a public services committee that reports to the AUL for Public Services.

Branch, unit and committee-based public websites are maintained by those groups while the LWC retains an advisory role to promote some degree of common graphic identity among them and to ensure that their web coordinators are aware of the need to point to important library-wide information. Subject specialists (Sage authors) are responsible for selecting and reviewing electronic resources for content and quality. The Metadata Services Department contributes the database of record (Roger) for electronic journals and government resources that will be exported to Sage. The Information Technology Department is responsible for all programming support of the site. (NOTE: internal library websites such as Libnet or branch intranets are not part of LWC's charge.)

Usability assessments, new web services, and planning for major new areas of functionality are now the responsibility of the Public Website Redesign group and the Web Managing Editor, who are responsible for planning and implementing the new libraries' website. The WME will have the role of point person or central filter for any new ideas for the current website. Request for new web services and functionalities will go to the WME. Examples of new web services and functionalities would include the implementation of a new search engine, a new wiki, new functionality in Sage, and a new sub-site such as Get Started.

The LWC is the central contact point for library staff when questions arise about the maintenance of the current UCSD Libraries' website. Wording or content changes, and the creation of an individual new page that fits in our current style, are examples of the maintanance that LWC is responsible for. When appropriate, issues will be brought to the appropriate groups for discussion and resolution.

Specific tasks include:

Coordinate the integration of all pages within the UCSD Libraries website to achieve a cohesive look and feel based on the modified web design guidelines (http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/lwc/modified.html)
Work with webmasters, content authors (of Sage records and web pages), and other groups and individuals as appropriate
Maintain effective functionality of Sage Author Tools and provide training opportunities in their use..
Maintain the subject/type taxonomy of the Sage database, and on the advice of library subject specialists make additions/revisions to reflect UCSD programmatic needs.
Develop and maintain an LWC website to disseminate minutes and documents, and provide access to author tools and resources.
Read comments and questions received from the feedback link to main Libraries website pages and respond or forward where appropriate.
Make incremental improvements in functionality and usability when those are identified.
The Chair of LWC will be the main contact for library web content in TritonLink and Blink. LWC will be responsible for the update of the content.

Membership

As successor to the Portal Project, an action-oriented development and implementation team, LWC can best retain flexibility and responsiveness by remaining relatively small, with membership comprising between six and eight people. This membership will not be strictly representative of library branches and units as is the case of other PSAC committees. Instead it is intended to represent among its several members the technical expertise needed to accomplish its work and the varied subject and public service experience needed to represent the UCSD Libraries' mission. Depending on workload and additional developmental tasks that may arise, the LWC may augment its membership by expanding the committee or forming ad hoc task groups.

Current  membership includes the following individuals.  The members are appointed for indefinite terms.  The chair serves for two years, appointed on even-numbered years.

SuHui Ho, Science & Engineering Library
Elliot Kanter, Social Sciences & Humanities Library/Bibliographers Representative
Jasmine Mann, Information Technology Department
Jenny Reiswig, Biomedical Library
Dan Suchy, Social Sciences and Humanities Library (Chair)
