Student
Organizations and Campus Life
Introduction
North of Tijuana, it's difficult to imagine a better place to
study Latin America than UCSD. The Spanish Colonial-style Gildred
Latin American Studies Building overlooks the Pacific Ocean
and is just a forty-minute drive from the international border.
A campus with some of the foremost Latin Americanist faculty
in the world with excellent resources for research and a privileged
location make UCSD an excellent choice for the student interested
in Latin America.
Students
Among the approximately 23,000 graduate and undergraduate students
at UCSD, Latin Americanists make up a small but diverse and
growing group of students who are seeking to connect their varied
study, work, and travel experiences in Latin America with an
academic study of the region in order to become more astute
observers of and participants in the region's period of change
and growth.
Organization
of Students Interested in Latin America (OSILA)
Many
of these students have taken part in activities sponsored by
OSILA, a group sponsored by Latin American Studies and Office
of Graduate Studies and Research. Graduate and undergraduate
compañeros from History, IR/PS, Linguistics, Political Science
and other departments often join Latin American Studies master's
students and undergraduates for educational and social activities.
The organization takes part in activities such as assisting
in re-stocking water stations along the border, a quarterly
film series, and salsa dancing. For information about the group,
please email lasmail@weber.ucsd.edu.
Research resources
Although UCSD was only founded 39 years ago, library resources
for studying Latin America are some of the best anywhere. The
rapidly growing collection on the region is handled by Latin
American Studies Librarian Karen Lindvall-Larson (be sure to
see her web page at http://sshl.ucsd.edu/las/), a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and
an expert in Latin American elections.
Campus Life
Events related to Latin America are not hard to find at UCSD;
the department puts out a weekly e-mail calendar of seminars,
films, and conferences happening at UCSD and in the San Diego/Tijuana
community (e-mail us at lasmail@weber.ucsd.edu to subscribe!).
