A
degree in Latin American Studies is designed for students who
seek to integrate a broad range of disciplinary approaches to
a world region of growing international significance. In an
age of broadening globalization and ties between the US and
Latin America, an understanding of the region has become especially
important in the business, public policy, diplomatic and educational
sectors.
Graduates from the program are bilingual and are knowledgeable
on Latin American political systems, economies, history, literature
and international affairs. Study-abroad and practical cross-cultural
experiences are strongly encouraged.
Upon graduation, some students pursue additional advanced degrees
in academic fields. The major also provides a valuable supplement
for those who subsequently pursue professional degrees in business,
law, engineering, medicine, or other disciplines. Others proceed
to careers in the private sector, in international organizations,
in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or in government. Some
of our alumni have gone on to such varied careers as coordinators
for local and Washington D.C.-based NGOs, international news
correspondents, university administrators, consultants, editors,
translators, and teachers.
