Park High School Student Visit |
| A
group of 20 high school students visited the UCSD campus.
They had a one-hour stop at CILAS where they toured the CILAS
building and met some of the staff. They were given a brief
overview of the major, minor, and the Master's program in
Latin American Studies. Several current LAS students also
spoke about why they chose Latin American Studies and some
of their experiences. |

Fair
Park Village Elementary School, Rancho Penasquitos |
| On Feb 6, 2003 the CILAS participated
in a Multicultural Fair at Park Village Elementary School
in Rancho Penasquitos. Diverse countries ranging from India,
Scotland, and Japan were showcased. We represented Latin America
with a booth filled with food, maps, children's books and
a booklet of activities on Latin America, among other items
brought in by our students. El Torito restaurant also donated
100 children's activity menus about Mexico. Participation
totaled about 300 parents, students, and teachers. Among the
many performances, one of the highlights was the CILAS- sponsored
Student Mariachi from city schools composed of 5th to 12th
graders. |

Multicultural Fair
Poway Unified School District
|
| On May 3, 2003 CILAS participated
in the Eleventh Annual Poway Unified School District Multicultural
Fair. In total, 12 schools and 14 countries were represented.
The CILAS Latin America booth featured homemade Salvadoran
tamales graciously made by one of our volunteers and Argentinean
empanadas. The display consisted of maps, molas from Panama,
and items from Peru, Chile, Mexico, Guatemala, and Paraguay.
The Mexico section included a Día de los Muertos display.
Through the magic of powerpoint we were able to exhibit flags
and other Latin American images. Participation totaled about
750 parents, students, and teachers. Several student, parent,
and CILAS volunteers kept the food sales going. Participating
schools received funds to purchase multicultural books. |
