Francisco Labastida, the candidate for the long dominant PRI is facing tough competition from challenge Vincente Fox of the PAN. PRD candidate Cuauhtemoc Cardenas is running well behind in polls predicting the outcome of the July 2nd election. Guests: Sallie Hughes, a former journalist who is now doing research on the Latin America media as a visiting scholar here at UCSD; Kenneth Greene, a doctoral candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley who studies campaigns in Mexico; and Andres Villarreal, a sociologist from the University of Chicago, also a visiting researcher at UCSD's Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies.
