To search all UCSD libraries material use Roger Web.

To search FVL material only use Film & Video Library (on Roger).

If you want to reserve FVL material for classroom use.
 

Roger Menu

Author (Director) - Enter last name first ( Hitchcock, Alfred). You may find two listings for a director one with name and one with name and dates.  Try both listings.

Title - Omit initial articles (Mariachi, Crying Game) .

Keyword - natural language searches for words and "exact phrases" in title, subject and content notes.  The order in which you enter words into the search box is important. If you are successful in finding a title with keyword, look at the item's subject heading, which can focus your search to like items.

  • Use operators: AND, OR, AND NOT.
  • Proximity: Use NEAR to specify words close to each other, in any order. Use WITHIN # to specify words within a set range of each other. Symbol # may stand for any number. 
  • Fields: a: (author), (title) t: , (subject) s: , (additional keyword) n:

Subject - Using LC Subject headings (example: War Films, Parent and Child, or Feature Films "country" ) . There is a 5 vol LCSH thesaurus for subject terms. Ask at the SSHL reference desk.

Limit Searches

Select Additional Options (+). - You'll find a menu of limit options including;

Material type - ( use when in complete Roger catalog ), limits search by material type. For FVL limit by - AUDIO-VISUAL. By choosing Film & Video Library on Roger's main menu, you have automatically limited by material type.

Language - example: SUBJECT - feature films, LIMIT by LANGUAGE - Italian. Your hits are Italian language films (which will be most, but not all Italian films. This is true for all language limits). For material that might be missed try  SUBJECT - feature film --  Italy, or Motion Picture -- Italy.

Subject - example: SUBJECT - motion pictures, German or feature films -- Germany. LIMIT by SUBJECT - silent. Your hits are German silent films 

Year - example - SUBJECT - feature films, LIMIT by YEAR <1930 - 1940>. Your hits are feature films from the 1930's

Multiple Searches.

SUBJECT - feature films -- Germany. Your hits are German films whatever the language spoken in the film. 

SUBJECT  - feature films. LIMIT to LANGUAGE German. Your hits are German language films only.

SUBJECT - feature films, Germany. LIMITby SUBJECT Silent Films. Your hits are German silent films.

SUBJECT - feature films, Germany. LIMITby SUBJECT Silent Films, LIMIT by YEAR - 1927. Your hits are German silent films from 1927.

Example FVLD-190-2 = FVL (location: Film & Video Library) D (laser disc) 190 (accession number) 2 (number of dics)

FVLP - petite reel (under 15 mins)

FVLS - small reel (under 20 mins)

FVLM - medium reels (20-45 mins)

FVLL - large reels (30-45 mins)

FVLXL - extra large reels (45-60min)

Example FVLL-157-3 = FVL (location: film & video Library) L (large reels) 157 (shelf number) 3 (number of reels)

Location
FVL ConCirc = Controled Circulation means access to collection is restricted and can only be searched through Roger (UCSD Libraries' on-line catalog).

Status
Available = can be checked out.  If item is checked out, there will be a due date in the status field.
Library Use Only = can be viewed in library only.  A library use only item can be used by a faculty member for classroom teaching.
