Finding Foreign &
Domestic Feature Films
In the FVL Collection using Roger
1. If you want to know what
films by a particular director are in the collection.
Author search
(example: Hitchcock, Alfred, Kiarostami, A )
2. If you want to know if
we have a particular film.
Title search (example:
Taste
of Cherry,
or
His Girl Friday
)
3. If you are unsure of the
exact title.
Keyword - searches
multiple words as "exact phrase" The order in which you enter words
into the search box is important.
Use operators: AND, OR, AND NOT. (example
s:motion pictures, spanish AND NOT Cuba)
Proximity: Use NEAR to specify words close to each other, in any
order. Use WITHIN # to specify words within a set range of each other.
Symbol # may
stand for any number. (example Taste NEAR Cherry)
Fields: (author) a:, (title) t: , (subject) s: , (additional keyword)
n: (example s: feature films n:16th century n: women)
4. If you want to know ALL
the feature films in the collection.
Subject search (example:
Feature
Films)
5. If you want all
the Latin American or African feature films in the collection.
Subject search (example:
Feature
Films--Latin America or
Feature Films--Africa)
6. If you want to know what
films from a particular country are in the collection
Subject search (example:
Feature
Films--France)
7.
If you want film in a particular language.
Subject
search (example; Motion Pictures French)
-
Motion Pictures -- Spanish,
gets
you films from Latin America, Mexico, Cuba, but not Brazil (Portuguese)
+ you get films from Spain.
-
Motion Pictures -- French,
gets you films from France as well as films from Africa in French.
-
Motion pictures -- Chinese,
gets you both Mandarin & Cantonese. Use Keyword -- Mandarin
to limit to this dialect.
8. If you do not find the foreign
film you are looking for using the above searches. Try a subject
search and then limit by language.
Subject search. (example:
Feature
Films) then Limit by Language - Dutch.
The languages are listed for you when you do a Roger search and then limit
by language.
9. If you want to know all
the Silent Films in the collection.
Subject search (example;
Silent
Films [ALL silent films], or Silent
Films--"country" [silent film from that particular country.] )
10. How about Experimental Films.
Subject search (example: Experimental
Films [all], or Experimental Films--"country" [experimental
films from that particular country] )
