Announcements:

• Adolfo announced that staff need to make notes regarding who and why an item is being recalled when using the SCU/SCP Unit circulation card. Margaret provided the document on it to be followed.
• Ryan sent a notice to CatCom about "illegal characters" that caused Melvyl rejects, such as question marks, apostrophes, and any diacritics copied & pasted from web sites. Margaret recommended that catalogers use OCLC Connexion to validate their records before exporting.
• Renee sent a question to the CONSER PURL list regarding the addition of BibPURLs to parallel language (PR) records. Valerie Bross responded that adding BibPURLs to PR records is reasonable and added, as a heads-up, that OCLC recently announced that PR records may be converted to Institutional Records in the future. When that conversion happens, we might not have editing rights on those PR records. This is interesting because Renee and Margaret had a previous question about whether we should cite headings and usage on PR records for inclusion in >670 notes in authority records. This might become a moot point if the PR records are hidden from the browse view. Adolfo and Margaret also reminded catalogers that they should continue to add >936 fields for PR records, as appropriate.

Discussion:

1) 5XX/7XX linking fields and discontinuing use of 530 fields (Margaret)

Margaret showed examples of what she discovered about linking entry displays on Roger. For example, the note in the 776 for the online version doesn't display. So the question is what we want to our practice to be. See attached handout. Adolfo suggested that we follow CONSER standard record cataloging guidelines. Adolfo will announce at CatCom and catalogers should change their macros accordingly.

We decided that locally we would follow CONSER standard record after next Tuesday announcement at CatCom and update our serials composite record cataloging procedure for using the 7XX $i and no longer using the 530 fields to record availability of other versions.

2) 856 $z package name, follow-up discussion (Becky)

While agreeing with proposal to be more specific in the $z, we need some guidelines so as to create $z package names in a consistent manner for UCSD and SCP. Becky will work on specific guidelines for creating the $z names. After which, we can look at needed clean-up. This proposal still needs to be reviewed by the SCP Advisory Committee.

3) Other

• Kate asked for status on proposal to remove 690s from CDL records. The SCP AC has signed off on this, so okay to remove them from the CDL records.
• Becky asked about converting all the database 590 notes to 793s. Okay to proceed on this as well.
