Discussion:

1) Cataloging "free trials" for titles in CDL packages

In the past it was unclear when and if trial access for electronic resources should be cataloged. SCP has a current policy not to catalog temporary free or trial access. Locally, we have requested cataloging on a case by case basis. Stacy is going to discuss local cataloging of titles in CDL packages for which the publisher is providing temporary access at the March Collections Coordinating Group (CCG) meeting and include this information in a prepared policy statement about when, why and which access should be cataloged in Roger. For practical purposes (and effective immediately, not dependent on the policy preparation), SCU catalogers will only catalog trial or temporarily free access serials if requested directly by Acquisitions Electronic Resources staff. If they get requests for cataloging of these items by other library staff (e.g., bibliographers), they should refer the requester to Acquisitions ER staff (electroniclib@ucsd.edu).

2) "Report or link- what to do with an online resource found during course of cataloging?"

There has been some confusion about online access found during the course of cataloging other titles. SCU was under the impression that they needed to contact bibliographers and/or ask Electronic Acquisitions staff to confirm the adding of these links. Catalogers can add links under the following circumstances:

1) FULL TEXT only journals for which full issues are open access
2) Stated as open to the public or confirmed by accessing from outside the library IP range (including proxy)
3) Nothing on page indicates a need for passwords, registration, signed licenses, or any other qualification for access
4) A bibliographic record for the item already exists in Roger
5) If the record is unclear in regards to nos. 2 and 3 above, SCU staff will consult with Acqusitions ER staff

If catalogers find online access to a resource which appears to be open access and the resource has not yet been cataloged, they can (based on their judgment and knowledge of the libraries' area of interests) contact the appropriate bibliographer, who can then formally request cataloging using the web-based form for cataloging of free resources: http://tpot.ucsd.edu/Cataloging/coldev.html

3) Assessment of SCDPP WG (Serials Cataloging Documentation, Policies and Procedures Working Group)

The consensus is that the group has been very valuable and "is ably meeting its charge." A number of old and obsolete procedures have been reviewed and removed from TPOT. It was decided the group should continue its work. There is no CJK person currently in the group. Adolfo will discuss this with Shi. Christine will be called in as needed for items with Special Collections ramifications. Adolfo will consult with Renee to see if any other membership issues should be considered.
