Discussion:

1. CONSER standard record

Documentation on the standard record has been pulled from the CONSER website for updating, so we postponed an in-depth discussion at this time. We all agree that using the standard record should save us cataloging time. We have questions about what fields should and shouldn't be required, especially uniform title fields. Also how to maintain records created under the old rules is a question. UCSD and SCP will need to have discussions about these and how to implement the new standard record as appropriate. This will include discussing changing our 7xx displays to use subfield "i" in place of some 5xx notes. We will form a committee out of SCFG to look at this particular issue.

2. Contributing to UC Funnel blog, list, etc.

The original idea behind the UC CONSER Funnel discussion group was to create a UC community of serials catalogers to share ideas, best practices, etc. So far, response has been termed somewhat lacking. Some group members think it may be interesting for us to post our SCFG minutes, as well as examples of interesting serials cataloging problems we may have solved to the UC Funnel listserv. Concern was expressed at posting minutes in their entirety, as some information may be irrelevant or inappropriate for all UC serials catalogers to see, as well as being too lengthy. The group decided instead to post highlights of appropriate cataloging-related discussion items, submit them to the list, and see if this generates any discussion or traffic on the listserv. The rotating SCFG minutes-taker will be responsible for this after each meeting.

Here's a stab at a possible post for this month's meeting:

"Greetings, UC serials catalogers--
The UCSD Serials Cataloging Fun Group met on 2/9/07. The following are some brief highlights from our discussion:

1. Contributing to UC Funnel listserv--We've decided to try posting highlights of UCSD's serials cataloging issues and discussion items to the listserv, with the thought that the information may be interesting or relevant to some and to promote and encourage more dialogue within the UC Funnel community. Please post and let us know what you think!

2. CONSER standard record-- We all agree that using the standard record should save us valuable cataloging time. We have questions about what fields should and shouldn't be required, especially uniform title fields. Also how to maintain records created under the old rules is a big question. We will be discussing the standard record more in-depth here at UCSD and on the CONSER standard record blog after documentation is updated on the CONSER website.

Until next time...UCSD-SCFG"

3. Code "i" for integrating resources

Serials Acquisitions staff needs to know how what material type we are coding integrating resources, (as of now, we are using code "s") and where to look to find information as to whether we are cataloging websites, databases, etc. Some options discussed are using material type "i," having catalogers code the cat treatment field in the check-in record with a specific field, or perhaps converting some of our 590 "UCSD licensed database" notes to 793 fields and adding additional information to them. Since Becky was not present at this meeting, we will hold off on deciding what specifically to do; in the meantime Stacy will ask Margaret for clarification on records as needed.
