Discussion:
1. CONSER
a. Margaret added UCSD's first authenticated CONSER record. Rest of the catalogers will begin feeding their authenticated records through Margaret on March 20th.
b. Autostat codes for CONSER authentication have been officially added to the system by Shirley, and Renee has updated our internal autostats page. See code use from Adolfo's email on 3/8/06:
Code: OCA -- Original CONSER Authentication: Used when cataloger creates an original, CONSER authenticated master record in OCLC.
Code: CCA -- Copy CONSER Authentication: Used when a cataloger CONSER authenticates an existing OCLC member copy record.
Code: SCA -- Subsequent CONSER Authentication: Used when a cataloger upgrades a lower level CONSER authenticated record to a higher level CONSER authenticated record (e.g., upgrades "msc" to "lcd")
A question has already come up regarding use of the new codes, "... if we enhance a record in addition to authenticating it, should we use ceh or seh in addition to cca, oca, or sca?"
Actually, the answer is no. Only one of the five CONSER codes should appear in any record, with use of cca, oca, or sca taking precedent over ceh or seh. For example, in a case where you added subject headings and an 856 link to a member copy record, and then also authenticated it, you would only use code cca.
c. Margaret also distributed two handouts: "Preparing CONSER Authenticated records for review" and "How to set default values for the My status feature in Connexion." Margaret will be distributing LCCN's to the people who attended the CONSER authentication training, who in turn are the only staff authorized to authenticate records.
d. The UC CONSER funnel has been approved by HOTS. Becky, Margaret, and Adolfo may be tapped to do training and review for the other campuses. SCP catalogers may have a new workload as campuses ask us to redistribute newly authenticated records.
e. Re: the UC funnel, the e-mail addresses given to V. Bross were our official UCSD email addresses. If you submit a message and it's returned saying you're not a member of the funnel list, send V. Bross an email with your Group-Wise address instead.
f. Aside: Virginia is now more involved with science materials. Acquisitions is doing outreach; trying to achieve consistency with branch staff responsible for serials processing. On our end, UCSD cataloging is now split between copy/original lines rather than subject. We are reminded that CONSER values both cooperation and quality from its contributors, and Adolfo entreated Acquisitions' help in being extra-vigilant in forwarding serials needing attention to us.
2. Document review: "Composite record cataloging (cataloging remote access electronic serials using the print record version)"
We finished reviewing this document, with special commendation to Renee for a clear and useful procedure.
650 fields (LCSH & MeSH): Renee will check with Becky to see if practice is to add at least one MeSH heading to all bml/mcl serial records.
655 field: We may discontinue the form/genre heading: "Online resources.|2local" for UCSD, but would probably continue to use for SCP.
690 field: Renee added background and examples to the procedures. Arvid thought perhaps our 690 terms could be flipped and used as genre terms. But Adolfo reminded us that the primary use of them is for the Sage database. Renee will change this section to say "Sage Subject Headings," and we may rename the portal subject list the same as well. Use of "e-journal only" in the portal subject list was found to be confusing, especially since it is used primarily for bibliographers to more finely distinguish academic subjects than is done at the campus level. Renee will remove term from this document and put it in the portal list only.
740 field: We will discontinue use of adding "online" to one-word titles, and will delete any we come across in editing.
776 field: We will add 776 for online version with e-issn for SFX, but will only do so for CONSER if the ISSN is authenticated. Renee will add hints for determining this.
793 field: No changes.
856 field: Adolfo reminded us to always consult the e-journal tracking pages for the latest information in constructing 793 and 856 fields.
Vendor code (nnet checkin records): Virginia confirmed that we should not be adding "cdl" to the vendor code in electronic checkin records.
Adolfo asked the SCDPP Working Group to discuss if there would be value in creating editing guidelines for UCSD serials, similar to the local procedure we have entitled "Editing guidelines for OCLC records: Books." Next on the working group's agenda is (hopefully!) finishing the accompanying CD-ROM/DVD-ROM documentation and start working on documentation for deleting/purging both print and electronic serials.
