Present: Renee Chin, Margaret Christean, Hanley Cocks, Becky Culbertson, Shi Deng, Stacy Nelson, Virginia Pulido-Casa, Nobuko Smith, Adolfo Tarango
Announcements:
• Adolfo is coordinating with V. Bross about CONSER training. Participants: initially for librarians and LA 5s, V. Bross is OK with more people joining, so Adolfo will try to include LA 4s, or maybe LA 3 for Hanley. Date is set for March 1st for her to come down. Group training about 2 hours, then Q&A session to address specific issues/questions. Current plan is for Margaret to be lead CONSER cataloger and she would be reviewing everyone’s work before submission.
• Ryan working on an SCP project to add the SFX Objective IDs for each title into the 035 field. There are 12% remaining that may need to be manually worked on. The SFX knowledge base (KB) includes titles for nearly all electronic journal packages. By using openURLs, SFX allows users to link to content from A&I databases. These appear in citations as UC e-links. We can also use these openURLs in bib records to link users to journals.
The KB lists targets and objects. Targets are publishers/platforms/database and objects are titles from those publisher/platforms/databases (e.g. Project Muse is a target, the individual titles within Project Muse are objects) CDL staff activate the UC links (turn them on or off), UCSD acquisitions staff activate the UCSD links.
• LA4 position: received 12 applications for review, by next Wednesday will decide who to contact for interviews.
• SCU staffing and work assignments have changed so that staff no longer need to separate serials by subjects/branches.
Discussion:
1. Cataloging for print titles continued by e-version (Renee/Adolfo)
Current (CONSER) practice is to close out print record and create e-version record. However, in Melvyl, this causes display problems because Melvyl merges these records making it appear that there is no title change involved. The proposal below was made, note that is diverges from CONSER practice.
Members expressed concerns about diverging from CONSER practice because Melvyl messed up the records.
Becky suggested using an unformatted 362 to note when the print ceased.
Proposal: For titles where the only change is in the format (i.e. the title does NOT change), continue to use the print record adding a local note that print has ceased and is continued exclusively by the online version only.
We wouldn’t do this unless the SCP Advisory Committee also supported the proposal.
There was majority, but not unanimous support for the proposal. Adolfo will present it to CatComm at their next meeting. If it finds support there, he will present it to the SCP Advisory Committee.
2. Document review: Composite record cataloging (cataloging remote access electronic serials using the print record version) (Renee)
050/090 and 086 fields: Approved by SCFG.
530 field: There were questions raised regarding the use of the phrase “Also issued online with additional title…” Adolfo and Becky clarified the following:
530 Also issued online with title: [title] (used for the website title when it varies from the print 245 title)
530 Also issued online with additional title: [title] (used for alternate titles for the electronic version)
590 field: No changes.
