China-Related Web Sites
- Academia Sinica Home Page is the gateway to
Taiwan's premier research institution. Most noteworthy for the historian is a
service which supports searches and text retrieval of Chinese documents (the Dynastic
Histories, e.g.).
- Asia Fellows Research Resources
page lists many helpful reference sites for the scholar of Asia. The Asia Fellows
program, funded by the Ford Foundation and administered by IIE, is dedicated to furthering
Asian studies in Asia.
- Asian Arts is an on-line journal
featuring articles and exhibitions of Asian art.
- The Association for Asian Studies contains
information on AAS publications and conferences, as well as employment listings and a
comprehensive "links" page.
- The Brooklyn College
Chinese Culture Page is the on-line segment of the college's Chinese Studies courses.
Check out the "General Reference Documents" section. You may also wish to visit
the Internet East
Asian History Sourcebook, compiled by the same author.
- China the Beautiful has many pages devoted to
Chinese culture, including art, poetry, and calligraphy. It also maintains a current
events page.
- China Monthly is an on-line journal of Chinese
culture. You will need Chinese-language software to read this site.
- China News Digest is maintained by a non-profit
organization dedicated to China-related reporting. In addition to news articles,
this site contains photo archives and the John King Fairbank Memorial Chinese
History Virtual Library.
- China 5000 bills itself as the first interactive
timeline of Chinese history. In addition to the timeline, China 5K is also host to
numerous "cultural" sites ranging from music to marriage practices to martial
arts.
- Classical Historiography
for Chinese History is authored by Professor Benjamin Elman of UCLA. It is a
"must-visit" site for any serious student of Chinese history. It contains
comprehensive bibliographies in addition to exercises in utilizing Classical Chinese
sources.
- The Complete Reference to China-Related Sites
claims to maintain links to over six thousand China-related websites. It supports a
general index which runs the gamut from Chinese history to Chinese restaurants.
- Council on East Asian
Libraries is an excellent reference for the Asia scholar. It maintains a
detailed and well-organized index of relevant websites as well as a comprehensive listing
of library resources.
- Digital Chinese Library is
sponsored by the Center for Chinese Studies Library at UC Berkeley. It is a very
well-organized site, with links to library catalogs, on-line references, and
periodicals. This site also maintains the events schedule for the Center for Chinese
Studies.
- The East Asian Studies Center is based at
Indiana University. This site is noteworthy for its detailed resources for K-12 education
on Asia.
- UCLA Center for East Asian Studies, like the above center at Indiana University, is particularly helpful for K-12 educators. However, scholars will also likely appreciate the guide to academic journals and language studies programs.
- European Association
of Sinological Librarians has an excellent "resources" section. It
also contains a nice listing of bibliographies as well
as links to the China
WWW Virtual Library.
- Harvard-Yenching Library Home Page
contains listings of the library's holdings and publications and hosts links to other
Harvard institutions such as the Fairbank
Center. Another Harvard page of note is the one dedicated to the study of the Sino-Japanese War,
including information on archival resources and the current state of the field.
- H-ASIA Discussion List
hosts an electronic discussion open to graduate students and professors specializing in
the field of Asian Studies.
- H-Net Asia-Pacific Network posts
announcements for conferences and calls for papers, lists employment opportunities and
on-line resources, and provides access to an archive of H-Net reviews.
- The Liaoning Provincial Archives in Shenyang have a great
website which in addition to providing summaries of its holdings and
current exhibitions involving materials there, also has links to other
archives with websites.
- World Wide Web
CJK-English Dictionary Database is an on-line dictionary of Chinese, Japanese, and
Korean characters. You will need Japanese-language software to use this site.
- The WWW Virtual Library-Asian
Studies is the source. Maintained by the Australian National Library,
this site contains listings of on-line journals, information systems, databases, study
abroad programs, and bookstores.
