ANQING PREFECTURAL ARCHIVES 安 慶 地 區 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, with many subsequent reorganizations and an archives bureau added in 1979. Holdings include 44 juan in 1 quanzong of revolutionary history archives of the CCP East China Bureau, administrative office of North Anhui, the CCP North Anhui and West Anhui committees, and the prefectural CCP committee, from 1947-1949. These include instructions, regulations, and reports on such affairs as taking over cities south of the Yangzi river, financial work in newly liberated areas, education, land reform, production and relief , suppression of the bandits and local despots, party and regime construction. The contemporary archives contain 19,140 juan in 34 quanzong, mainly from the prefectural CCP committee and government and their subordinate offices and mass organizations, including 16,939 juan of documentary, 644 juan of personnel, and 757 juan of financial archives, 44 boxes of tapes and videos, 756 ce of documents. Printed materials total 502 types with 2,900 ce. In 1987, there were 206,421 juan in 615 quanzong and 64,910 ce of printed materials in Anqing’s prefectural and 12 county archives, including 2,494 juan in 21 quanzong of historical archives. Open.

BENGBU CITY ARCHIVES 蚌 埠 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1961. In 1949, the Public Security Bureau took possession of 41 remaining juan of old regime archives. 1985: 22,600 juan of archives, including 21,649 juan of PRC government archives, 863 juan of specialized archives, and 94 juan of technical archives. Catalogues, photo-copying. Open.

CHAOHU PREFECTURAL ARCHIVES 巢 湖 地 區 檔 案 館

Est. 1965 as the archive office of the prefectural government, closed during CR, resumed operations in 1972. In 1990, there were 368,400 juan of archives in the county archives of the prefecture, including 1,889 juan of documentary, 8,156 juan of technical, and 2,983 juan of special archives. Since1988, 201,662 juan in 301 quanzong have been opened. In an effort to preserve historical archives, over 2000 juan have been reproduced.

CHIZHOU PREFECTURAL ARCHIVES 池 州 地 區 檔 案 館

Est. 1976. 1993: 5,594 juan in 3 quanzong, including 4,735 juan of documentary archives; 20 types of printed materials totaling 87 ce; 92 ce of compilation of documents. They are mainly from the CCP Chizhou prefectural party committee, government office, revolutionary committee and their subordinate offices and mass organizations. Ming-Qing archives contain only some gazetteers, genealogies and inscriptions. The republican archives are also only fragmentary. Open.

DANGTU COUNTY ARCHIVES 當 涂 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1958, disbanded during CR, resumed operations in 1980. Holdings: 12,890 juan in 80 quanzong, divided into six parts: documentary, personnel, technical, accounts, public security, and tapes and videos. DINGYUAN COUNTY ARCHIVES 定 遠 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, ceased functions during CR, resumed operations in 1973. 1990: 15,945 juan in 72 quanzong, including 6224 juan of documentary archives, 6 juan of technical archives, 2,731 juan of census archives, 521 juan of Four Clean-up archives, 4,423 juan of discipline inspection archives, 457 juan of forestry archives, 496 juan of "headless" (untitled?) archives, 187 juan on the deceased. Printed materials total 10,582 juan, including Ming- Qing county gazetteers, major events, administrative divisions. A lot of archives were lost during CR. Open.

DONGZHI COUNTY ARCHIVES 東 至 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1959, ceased functions during CR with a loss of many archives reflecting economic activities. 1985: 12,674 juan in 35 quanzong of archives (including 356 juan of reproduced historical archives) and 9,848 ce of printed materials,. In 1959, when the former Dongliu ( 東 流 ) and Zhide (至 德 ) counties were merged into one county, some of the land deed archives from Dongliu were lost. During the CR, some archives were destroyed for "war preparedness."

FEIXI COUNTY ARCHIVES 肥 西 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. At this time 4567 juan of archives were organized, but it is unclear if they date from before 1949, or if they have survived. In 1992, DAGZQS reported 30,047 juan/ce of archives and materials, including 29 juan (505 pieces) of revolutionary history archives, and 26,805 juan of post-1949 archives. The gazetteer reported 2,790 ce of printed materials in 1985. There are 31,518 juan of archives in 131 archive offices in various county units. Open.

FUYANG COUNTY ARCHIVES 阜 陽 縣 檔 案 館

GUICHI COUNTY ARCHIVES 貴 池 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1987: 17,069 juan of archives in 55 quanzong, and 903 types of printed materials totaling 6,818 ce. Some important archives were burned by the county government at the beginning of the war against Japan in 1938. Part of the republican archives (2,800 juan) were taken over by the Public Security Bureau after 1949, and later were turned over to the Provincial Archives. Open.

HE COUNTY ARCHIVES 和 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, disbanded during CR. 1988: 25,174 juan in 54 quanzong, including 157 juan of historical archives in 1 quanzong, 23,926 juan of documentary archives, 37 juan of technical archives, 1,054 juan of special archives, 20 cassettes of tapes, and 514 photos. In 1986, 542 juan of republican archives were accepted and copied. (It is unclear if these were reorganized and included in the 157 juan of historical archives noted above.) There are 1,249 types of materials totaling 4,538 ce including gazetteers, historical books, policies and laws, statistics, reference books and post-1949 newspapers. They archives have edited materials on natural disasters and CCP party history.

HUAINING COUNTY ARCHIVES 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1987: 17,500 juan in 32 quanzong, including 223 juan of republican archives(copies), 8,375 juan of archives from current and abolished departments, 8,861 juan of special archives, 48 juan of technical archives, 4 boxes of photos, and 5,754 ce of printed materials. Catalogues. Open.

HUOSHAN COUNTY ARCHIVES 霍 山 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1959. 1992: 14,191 juan in 37 quanzong, including historical, revolutionary history and contemporary documentary archives. The gazetteer reported 51 types of printed materials totaling 403 ce. Current archives include documents from the county party committee and government since 1949, documents from departments of the party committee before 1966, documents from bureaus and offices of the county government before 1958, and from abolished units such as five-anti office, party rectification and incorrect work style office, industrial survey office, etc.. There are 61,120 juan of archives in various units’ archive offices. Open.

JIESHOU CITY ARCHIVES 界 首 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. Total holdings unclear. In 1960, 64 items of revolutionary history materials were catalogued. In 1963, 105 juan of rectification archives were catalogued. In 1965-66, 216,780 juan of "unnecessary" or duplicate archives were eliminated. In 1981, 9,888 juan of Four Clean-up archives were organized. Open. Catalogues.

Rare archives include a copy of a letter of Wang Jiaxiang when a young man. There are also 17 newspapers (some pre-1949) totaling 2,100 ce, 8,102 ce of periodicals of 50 types, and other books and materials, 4 editions of Jing xianzhi from before 1829, materials of the Yunling headquarters of the New Fourth Army, 31 ce of materials and periodicals edited and published by the CCP party and its army during the war against Japan and the Civil War, and some instructions from leaders. The archives have edited materials on party history and the CCP in Jing county. Open.

Est. 1958. In 1965, 2,409 juan of archives were sorted into 908 juan, stopped work during CR, resumed operations in 1978 with 3,160 juan of archives. 1985: 13,534 juan, plus 12,852 books and printed materials. Open.

LINQUAN COUNTY ARCHIVES 臨 泉 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. DAGZQS reports 37,813 juan of archives in 70 quanzong including documentary, technical, lawsuit, financial, employment reform, land register and photo archives. The gazetter reports a much smaller numbers, but also few categories: 5,949 juan in 114 quanzong from the county party committee and government, 1,658 juan of cadres archives, 3,441 juan of supervision archives, 1,070 juan of land archives, and 3,501 ce of printed materials. After 1949, 20 juan of republican archives (mainly bulletins, appointments and dismissals, administrative divisions) were turned over to the Provincial Archives. Open.

LIXIN COUNTY ARCHIVES 利 辛 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1985: 20,761 juan of archives, including 17 juan of pre-1949 archives. They are divided into three parts: permanent archives (kept over 50 years) of 9,264 juan, long- term archives (kept 16-50 years) of 4,265 juan, and short-term archives (kept less than 15 years) of 6,232 juan. SHE COUNTY ARCHIVES 歙 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, ceased functions during CR, resumed operations in 1975. 1990: 37,906 juan of archives in 162 quanzong; and 3,587 ce of printed materials, including 358 types of archives and materials from the Song, Ming, Qing and Republican periods, and 2,507 juan of Four Cleans archives. In 1942, a large part of the archives was burned by the county government, the remainder and the archives from 1943 to 1949 were turned over to the Provincial Public Security Department. Later they were transferred to the Provincial Archives. Open.

SHITAI COUNTY ARCHIVES 石 台 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1967, disbanded in 1969, resumed operations in 1973. Holdings: 9,000 juan of archives and printed materials. The various archives are mainly from 1949 to 1958 and from after 1965. The materials include gazetteers, history books, policies, collected works of revolutionary articles, newspapers and periodicals. In 1955, "according to regulations," the full archives of the republican government were turned over to the Provincial Archives. Open.

SHUCHENG COUNTY ARCHIVES 舒 城 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, closed during CR, resumed operations in 1975, 1985: 25,354 (25,345?) juan, almost half of which were added in 1985. The main body is documentary archives, plus technical, account, education, and contracts archives. Roughly 10,000 ce of printed materials. The republican archives of the county government, assembly and GMD party committee were hidden in a private home in 1948, discovered in 1951 and then transferred by the county Public Security Bureau to the Provincial Archives. In 1984 local gazetteer editors located only 116 juan remaining from this collection. These were copied and returned to the county archives. Open.

Est.1958. Holdings: 13,121 juan in 58 quanzong. The documentary archives include 3,982 juan of permanent, 2,402 juan of long-term, and 3,662 juan of short-term. SUIXI COUNTY ARCHIVES 濉 溪 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, stopped work during CR. Holdings: 8,833 juan of documentary archives and 8 types of printed materials with 3,806 ce covering materials on provincial, prefecture, and county national economy, year book, mines, the revolutionary history in North-east of Anhui province, biographies of martyrs in Suixi county, gazetteers, etc.. The main contents of the documentary archives are from county CCP committee and government organs since 1950, including work summaries, appointment and dismissal of cadres, documents of party conferences and people’s congress conferences, government work plans, records of letters from and visits by the people, etc. Many archives were destroyed during CR. TAIHU COUNTY ARCHIVES 太 湖 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. Holdings include

Historical archives. The original 700-800 juan of republican archives were reduced to only 70-80 juan when they were transferred during the war against Japan. Then, most of the remaining archives were destroyed by the retreating KMT government on the eve of Liberation. In the early 1950s, roughly 202 juan of historical archives were collected from old regime organs, defeated and dispersed KMT staff, and targets of suppression. In 1956, these were turned over to the provincial Public Security Department, which turned them over to the Provincial Archives in 1983.

Documentary archives: about 8,000 juan.

Special archives: seriously destroyed during the early period of the PRC. In 1960, 95% of the 300,000 pieces of the land reform certificate stubs were destroyed, and only 269 juan were left when sent to the county archives. In 1966, most of the education archives and personnel archives were destroyed.

TIANCHANG COUNTY ARCHIVES 天 長 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958 as the Binghui 炳 輝 County Archives, renamed Tianchang archives in 1960. Seriously destroyed during CR, resumed operations in 1975. 1985: 15,448 juan, including 10,502 juan of documentary archives, 78 juan of technical archives, 4,908 juan of special archives. 491 types of printed materials totaling 7,173 ce. TONGCHENG COUNTY ARCHIVES 桐 城 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1987: 21,443 juan in 117 quanzong, including 464 juan of pre-1949 archives. PRC archives contain 15,745 juan of documentary, 70 juan of technical, and 5,164 juan of special archives, 13 boxes of tapes and videos, 714 photos. The historical "archives" appear to be largely old maps and publications: maps of Tongcheng county of Ming, the blueprints of rebuilding the Confucian temple in Tongcheng in Qing, the maps of imperial Qing, the maps of the Yangzi river valley, and handwritings of some celebrities. Local materials include:

gazetteers, such as Tongcheng xuxiu xianzhi of the Daoguang era, Tongcheng xianzhilue in 1936, Tongxiang shuyuanzhi, etc..

historical books, including the chronicles of Mr.Fang Mizhi, biographies of notable personages in Tongcheng, the chronicles of Yao Nai, miscellaneous memories about Longmian.

TONGLING CITY ARCHIVES 銅 陵 市 檔 案 館

Est.1958 with archives of 645 juan, renamed as Tongling Special Prefectural Archives in 1964 and with holdings of 6,420 juan in 1966, restored in 1975. Many archives were lost during CR. 1985: 15,386 (13,829?) juan of archives, including 9,057 juan of documentary archives, 3,160 folders of technical archives, and 3,143 boxes of financial archives, and 7,504 (5,731?) ce of printed materials, plus 100,916 pieces of blueprints. Among those, only 8 juan are left from before 1949. There were 115,743 juan of archives in all in Tongling city in 1985. Catalogues. Open.

WUHE COUNTY ARCHIVES 五 河 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1958. Holdings (DAGZQS): 17,786 juan in 97 quanzong, including old-regime archives; documentary archives; and special archives of land reform, letters and complaints (xinfang), census and finance; also 3,147 ce of printed materials; local gazetteers, books and newspapers. WUHU CITY ARCHIVES 蕪 湖 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1960. Total holdings unclear, but mostly party and government archives, and archives of disbanded units such as the Educated Youth office, office to reverse verdicts of anti-Rightist Movement etc.. Most of the KMT Wuhu county government archives were taken over by the military command in 1949. In 1955, these and some Ming-Qing archives were turned over to the provincial Public Security Department. ANXI COUNTY ARCHIVES 安 溪 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1990: 25,682 juan in 88 quanzong.

Republican archives: 5,622 juan, from the KMT county committee, government and Youth Corp on justice, police, public security, education, public health, finance and taxes, land, production and transportation.

Revolutionary history archives: 77 juan.

Historical archives: 2 items.

PRC archives: 17,312 juan of documentary archives from the CCP county committee, government, people’ congress and their subordinate offices, workers’ union and women federation, etc.; technical archives: 166 juan; special archives: 2,503 juan; 616 photos.

Printed materials total 7,469 ce with 1,422 types, including local newspaper, statistics, Anxi youth from republican period, Anxi xianzhi, Quanzhou fuzhi and other gazetteers. The gazetteer notes that in March 1989, the archives began a process of opening by stages the republican, revolutionary history and historical archives to the public. In the first stage, 945 juan of republican archives on administration, public health, taxes and finance, grain, education and public works were opened.

CHANGTING COUNTY ARCHIVES 長 汀 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, ceased functioning during CR; after several reorganizations, restored in 1979. 1987: 2,710 juan of republican archives with 170 ce of printed materials, including Tingzhou fuzhi from the Qianlong era and Changting xianzhi from the Guangxu era and registers of the CCP party member of Chumao district of 1934. Contemporary documentary and specialized archives total 24,761 juan in 74 quanzong, plus 1,171 boxes of tapes and videos and 3,293 ce of printed materials with 1,086 types. Est. 1958. 1988: 44 juan of revolutionary history archives on the CCP headquarters in Min-Zhe-Gan and in central Fujian and documents, photos, and note books of the CCP county committee’s meetings in 1947; 7,386 juan of republican archives (1937-1949) from the local KMT committee, government, police, court, military court and land department; 23,085 juan of PRC archives from 1949 to 1980, including 1,627 juan of archives from the early 1960s socialist education movement and letters and petitions from the old revolutionary base areas. JIAN’OU COUNTY ARCHIVES 建 甌 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1959. 1992: 50,700 juan, including 38,900 juan of documentary and 103 juan of technical archives. Blueprint drafts: 81 items; photos: 2,758 items; printed materials: 8,623 ce. After 1949, the county government took over the archives of the KMT party committee, county government, Youth Corps, military garrison, county court, police and tax and finance bureau. These records were organized into 9,529 juan which are kept in the county archives. In 1960, a 1927 bulletin of the Sixth Division of the National Revolution Army and the genealogy of Yang Rong, a Ming tutor of the heir apparent, were catalogued by the archives. Catalogues. Open.

JINJIANG CITY ARCHIVES 晉 江 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1959, seriously damaged during CR and disbanded in 1968, restored in 1978. Holdings: 31,563 juan in 74 quanzong, plus genealogies and printed materials. They are divided into 4 kinds:

Republican archives: 11,316 juan (1930-49) from Jinjiang and also present-day Quanzhou (泉 州 ), Licheng (鯉 城) and Shishi (石 獅 ) relating to the KMT party, government, military affairs, police, court, education, land taxes, finance, and construction.

PRC archives: 20,247 juan in 72 quanzong from the county party committee, government departments, industries, enterprises and associations. Among these, 4,453 juan in 18 quanzong are from party and mass organizations; 7,923 juan in 19 quanzong from government organs; 7,281 juan in 22 quanzong from qu, zhen, and xiang; 416 juan in 13 quanzong from factories, schools and medical units. There are also technical and special archives.

Genealogies: over 250 ce from more than 20 lineages, including records of Zheng Chenggong’s regaining Taiwan and that of people traveling abroad and settling in Taiwan.

Printed materials: 4,454 ce with 898 types, including 61 kinds of republican materials totaling 278 ce, such as Quanzhou daily, Minshengbao, Jiangshengbao.

LIANCHENG COUNTY ARCHIVES 連 城 縣 檔 案 館

Holdings: 29,454 juan of archives and printed materials in 87 quanzong, including 7,873 juan of republican archives. The republican archives cover the years 1928-49 and are virtually complete [an extremely rare phenomenon]. They derive from the three offices (secretariat, accounts, statistics) and six departments (civil affairs, finance, education, construction, land administration and social affairs) of the county government. During the War of Resistance, there was also an office of the provincial party bureau in Liancheng. In 1949, a KMT militia force and regular army unit retreated through Liancheng and also left behind important records. PRC archives contain 17,942 juan of documentary archives from the county party committee, government and their subordinate offices and abolished departments from 1949-85, photos, tapes and videos. Printed materials include gazetteers, genealogies and newspapers. Catalogues: 156 volumes of file catalogues, plus card catalogues of 11,003 cards for documents, and 50,264 cards for persons mentioned in republican archives. Open.

LONGHAI COUNTY ARCHIVES 龍 海 縣 檔 案 館

In 1958, both Longxi (龍 溪 ) and Haicheng (海 澄 ) counties established archives, and these were combined into the Longhai archives when the counties were merged in 1960. The archives were disbanded during CR, restored in 1978. 1991: 25,304 juan in 102 quanzong, 1,055 photos and tapes and videos, 5,684 ce of printed materials. When the KMT fled in 1949, they left some archives which were kept by the relevant departments of the county. These records are apparently now in the archives, whose historical archives are said to be in good condition and relatively complete. Catalogues. Open.

LONGYAN PREFECTURAL ARCHIVES 龍 岩 地 區 檔 案 館

Total holdings of the prefectural archives unclear. In 1949, each county in the prefecture took over the republican archives. In 1955, 3,870 juan of republican archives (1935-49) were organized [and are probably in the prefectural archives]. In 1965, 14,267 juan from the prefecture, and Longyan, Yongding, Zhangping, Liancheng and Changting county archives were destroyed as unnecessary documents. In 1987, all party rectification archives were collected by the archives. In all Longyan prefecture archives in 1987, there were 214,965 juan in 309 quanzong, including 31,431 juan of historical archives, 2,466 juan of special, and 488 juan of technical archives. NAN’AN COUNTY ARCHIVES 南 安 縣 檔 案 館

1988: in the county there were 5,845 juan from the county party committee and government and their subordinate offices, 8,262 juan from townships, and over 7,000 juan from factories including documentary, technical, personnel and account archives. There would appear to be substantial republican archives. The gazetteer refers to an unusually sophisticated republican era classification of archives based on the Dewey decimal system with categories for civil affairs, finance, construction, education, security and general affairs. These archives are said to have been restored and reorganized into over 2,000 juan. In addition, 753 juan of scattered republican archives were collected in 1963. Open.

NANPING CITY ARCHIVES 南 平 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1959. 1990: 31,795 juan in 103 quanzong, including 13,317 juan of republican archives (1923-1949) and 18,478 juan of PRC archives; 4492 ce of printed materials in 1166 titles. Some republican archives (for example the education records) were lost during the early 50's due to the careless handling by the military authorities. Otherwise, archives on county government, party organizations, military and police, baojia, land, public health, finance and trade, agriculture and industry, are quite well preserved. NINGDE CITY ARCHIVES 寧 德 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, stopped work during CR, resumed operations in 1978. 1992: 24,154 juan in 64 quanzong of archives and 7,668 ce of printed materials. The 3,309 juan in 11 quanzong of old-regime archives are mainly from the KMT county committee, government, Youth Corps and agricultural and commercial associations on land, taxes, lawsuits, education and irrigation. Among those, the republican land registers are the only complete records of property ownership (houses) in Eastern Fujian Province. The contemporary document archives are mainly from the party and government organs and people’s associations relating to politics, economy, education, production and technology. There are also special, technical, tape and video archives. Printed materials include statistics, gazetteers, documents, and newspapers. PINGHE COUNTY ARCHIVES 平 和 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1965. 1988: 16,285 juan of documentary archives; 25 juan of scientific archives and 523 photos. There were 1,206 juan of republican archives on civil affairs, finance, education, construction and military affairs that were taken over by the military, then the public security bureau. Est. 1959. 1988: 2,412 juan of republican archives on general affairs, civil affairs, finance, construction, and education. (In 1984, public security turned over 2,189 of these to the archives.) Most archives from before 1939 were lost and the remainder are partially damaged. There are 19,558 juan of PRC archives from local offices, including archives of the county government and its subordinate offices; 880 juan on the socialist education movement in six local communes; and 8,835 ce of books. PUTIAN COUNTY ARCHIVES 莆 田 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. There are 3,800 juan of republican archives in 11 quanzong from the KMT county committee, government, Youth Corps, police bureau, salt fields, schools and hospitals (1938-49). The contents include laws, regulations, appointments and dismissals, registers, budgets, work reports, lawsuits, and the baojia system.. There are also revolutionary history archives recording activities of the CCP Putian county committees (1926-49), with lists of cadres, regulations of the peasants associations, regulations for grain purchase and tax reduction, seals of the Soviet government, letters, posters and photos of martyrs. Contemporary documentary archives total 28,427 juan in 88 quanzong. Printed materials include Wanli fuzhi, Qianlong xianzhi, genealogies, over 10 kinds of local newspapers of the republican period and more than 6,500 ce of internal publications. Open.

Republican archives: 6,179 juan in 10 quanzong from 1923-49, including archives from the county government (1935-49: 3,556 juan), KMT county committee (1930-49: 201 juan), Youth Corps (1944-47: 33 juan), departments of justice (1934-49: 473 juan), police bureau (1937-49: 719 juan), hospitals (1938-49: 71 juan), power plants (1938-49: 708 juan), tax bureau (1940-49: 144 juan), departments for land and grain (1940-49: 72 juan), middle school (1943-49: 105 juan), relief office (1943-49: 73 juan) and the Tongshanshe (1923-26, 1928, 1933: 24 juan). Also included are conferences records and photos. The republican archives were taken over by the new regime in 1949 and turned over to the public security bureau. In 1987, they were returned to the archives.

Contemporary archives: 16,578 juan in 46 quanzong. The documentary archives include regulations, rules, reports, meeting minutes, statistics and correspondence, relating to party and government affairs, administrative divisions, appointments and dismissals, economic construction, education, public health, technology, finance and trade. There are also technical archives, specialized archives and tapes and videos.

Printed materials. The republican materials include compilations of republican laws, Fujian provincial laws, bulletins, yearbooks, materials on civil administration, military affairs, justice, construction, finance and education, and local publications as Qiusheng tongxun and Qiusheng zhoubao. Gazetteers include Fujian tongzhi, Jiajing yanping fuzhi, Sha xianzhi ( editions of Kangxi 40, Daoguang 14, Tongzhi 15 and 1928). Also included are many contemporary documents, newspapers and periodicals.

Est. 1958, disbanded during CR, resumed operations in 1978. 1988: 27,068 juan in 69 quanzong, plus 5,507 ce of printed materials of 2,001 types. There were 42,050 juan of archives and 2,500 ce of printed materials in 63 archives offices countywide. Most republican archives were destroyed by the KMT military department head; but after 1949, the public security bureau turned over 322 juan of documentary archives in four quanzong: for the KMT party committee, the county government, the Youth Corps and the middle school.

SONGXI COUNTY ARCHIVES 松 溪 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1988: 9,558 juan of contemporary archives, including documentary, special, technical and photos archives. Republican archives suffered great losses in a fire in 1938 and through KMT destruction of key records in 1949. The remaining records were kept by the public security bureau as "enemy regime archives" (diwei dang’an 敵 偽 檔 案 ), but the suffered from mildew and insect damage in poor conditions. In 1986, they were turned over to the archives, restored, reorganized into 6,339 juan and kept in a special historical archives storage area. Catalogues. Open.

Est. 1958 as Chong’an (崇 安 ) county archives, disrupted by the CR, resumed operations in 1978, renamed as Wuyishan city archives in 1989. 1993: 29,895 juan in 76 quanzong, including 8,560 juan of republican archives in 13 quanzong; 308 juan of revolutionary history archives (many collected in a 1949-52 effort to collect records from the Soviet period). Contemporary archives include 19,094 juan of documentary, 1,519 juan of account, 85 juan of technical, 202 juan of forestry and census archives and 2,025 photos. There are 3 Qing genealogies, 12 juan of land deeds (99 items) and 159 paper money notes from the Qing and republican period (including those from the Central Soviet Base area and the North Fujian Soviet area). WUPING COUNTY ARCHIVES 武 平 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1987: 18,275 juan in 66 quanzong; 5,600 ce of printed materials. There were also 28,267 juan of documentary and 2,589 juan of technical archives in countywide archives offices. The republican archives were reduced to only 56 juan on politics, plus 142 juan of other archives in 1950 due to KMT destruction as the old regime collapsed and inappropriate destruction in the first year of the PRC. There are four storehouses, keeping republican archives, party and mass archives, government archives and archives from subordinate county departments. ZHOUNING COUNTY ARCHIVES 周 寧 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1988: 15,168 juan on 60 quanzong, including 6,375 juan archives of pre-1949 archives received from public security in 1985 and 8,793 juan of PRC archives; 2,007 ce of printed materials. The content and distribution of the republican archives are reflected in figures from the early 1950s, when the total was given as 5,766 juan. ANXI COUNTY ARCHIVES 安 西 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. 1985: 14,423 juan of archives; including 117 juan of republican archives from 1934 to 1949 on local government, personnel, local self-government, water resources, mining, land tax, disputes over water resources, and education; 11,201 juan of PRC archives in 59 quanzong on county government and its subordinate offices relating to party affairs, state-building, bandit elimination, political movements, industry, agriculture, education, public health, finance, local militia and other local affairs. The archives are in the form of reports, regulations, correspondence, meeting records, and various statistics. There are also scientific, personnel and photo archives. Printed materials include local newspapers, gazetteers, maps, books and magazines.

GAOTAI COUNTY ARCHIVES 高 台 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958, disbanded in 1968, resumed operations in 1973. Holdings (1990?): 12,225 juan of archives, including 10,960 juan of documentary (of which 7,667 juan (1949-1989) are from local administration and disbanded units; 2,045 (1949-1983) are from local qu, gongsuo and xiang offices; and 1,194 juan are from local industry and schools. There are also 161 juan of technical (1950-1989), 331 juan of personnel, 766 juan of financial, and 51 juan of special archives; 20 juan of photos, personnel archives of unlawful cadre activities; and 6,561 ce of printed materials,. The printed materials contain statistics, newspapers, gazetteers and maps. Catalogues. Open. In 1969, 4,056 juan of archives were destroyed as a part of war preparedness, thus almost all of the documents from superior and subordinate offices were lost. Open.

JINCHANG CITY ARCHIVES 金 昌 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1984. 1991: 4,645 juan of documentary archives; 977 photos; 34 tapes and videos; 1,189 ce of printed materials. In 1988, 1,899 juan of republican archives were received from the Wuwei (武 威 ) prefectural Public Security Bureau. There are also 51,198 juan of archives kept in archives offices in various units. JINGNING COUNTY ARCHIVES 靜 寧 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1959, disbanded for a period of time, resumed operations in 1977. 1985: 6,943 juan in 52 quanzong; 1,935 ce of printed materials. In 1949, the county Public Security Bureau took the archives of the KMT county committee, Youth Corps, government, departments of civil affairs, construction, finance, education and military affairs, local court, office of land and grain, workers’ union, and peasants’ association. They were transferred to the archives in 1983, 1,056 juan in all. The PRC documentary archives are 5,887 juan, mainly from the county committee, government, and their subordinate departments, qu, xiang, communes and people’s associations. The contents include irrigation, electricity, industry survey, soil survey and census. Catalogues. Open.

KANGLE COUNTY ARCHIVES 康 樂 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1962. 1985: 15,195 juan in 67 quanzong, including 14,078 juan of documentary archives and 1,117 juan of special archives; printed materials of 857 ce. The 315 juan in 17 quanzong of republican archives were tranferred to the (臨 夏 ?) Zhou archives. They are from the KMT county committee (118 juan), government (16 juan), no.1 administration (2 juan), and their subordinate offices.

LINXIA MUSLIM AUTONOMOUS DEPARTMENT ARCHIVES 臨 夏 回 族 自 治 州 檔 案 館

NOTE: While the information below from the department gazetteer indicates extensive archives in Linxia, the number of juan are inconsistent with, and often less than, those indicated in other sources. The data below should be compared to Ye and Esherick 1996: 92-93.

Est.1959, stopped work during CR, resumed operations in 1975. Holdings: 43,759 juan of archives including:

Documentary archives: 33,612 juan in 167 quanzong. Included are

PRC archives: 26,858 juan in 96 quanzong, from the party and government offices, mass organizations and enterprises. The contents include local construction, autonomy and political movements.

Revolutionary history archives: 8 items; documents on bandit suppression and state-building from August 22 to September 30 of 1949.

Historical archives: over 30 items. They include epitaphs, imperial decrees, orders, documents, memorials and maps from Ming and Qing period. Among those, a Map of 24 passes in Hezhou is the earliest extant map in Linxia.

Republican archives: 6,754 juan in 76 quanzong, from the 1912 Beiyang government era to 1949, including documents from the KMT Linxia office, government, courts, military force and mass organizations of Linxia special administration, and Linxia, Yongjing, Hezheng, Ningding, and Kangle counties. The gazetteer gives a detailed listing of republican archives, including 11,000 items from the local court.

Individual and lineage archives:

Deeds and marriage contracts: 415 items, mostly from the Ma Qi (馬 麒 ) clan from Qing Jiaqing to Xuantong period. Among those, the contract of 1817 is the earliest extant contract in Linxia.

Deeds from the republican period: 870 items.

Genealogies, certificates, passports, and appointments from Ma Hongkui and other clans: 2,000 items.

Books and manuscripts archives: He zhouzhi (1707) is the earliest extant book in Linxia. Also manuscripts of other local famous men.

Others: 297 items of pawn receipts, tax receipts, and land certificates from Qing and republican period; 986 juan of account archives and 330 ce of technical archives from disbanded units.

Photos: 8,800, including 14 revolutionary history photos and 801 items from the 1920s to 1940s.

Yapes: 28.

Printed materials: 7,600 ce.

Ming and Qing materials: about 200 ce. The contents include the reproduced Ming-Qing archives, memorials, gazetteers and poems.

Republican materials: 1410 ce, including materials of Ma clans, Muslim classics, epitaphs and a list of KMT military students from Linxia.

Contemporary materials: over 5,420 ce, including newspapers, maps and books on the history of Hui, Dongxiang, Bao’an, Sala miniorites.

MINLE COUNTY ARCHIVES 民 樂 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1958. 1990: 22,157 juan in 82 quanzong. The holdings include 20,456 juan of documentary archives, 460 juan of technical archives and 1,241 juan of special archives. Tapes. Photos. There are also 5,288 ce of printed materials. In 1968, 1070 juan of republican era archives were transferred to the Zhangye Prefectural Revolutionary Committee for safekeeping. [Their present status is unknown.] In an effort to save historical archives from after 1949, 1,277 juan of archives had been reproduced by 1985. SHANDAN COUNTY ARCHIVES 山 丹 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1958, ceased functions during CR, resumed operations in 1974. 1988: 11,948 juan in 60 quanzong, including 11,717 juan of documentary archives,187 juan of special archives, 24 dossiers of technical archives and 20 ce of tapes and videos; plus 5,923 ce of printed materials. SUNAN YUGU AUTONOMOUS COUNTY ARCHIVES肅 南 裕 固 族 自 治 縣 檔 案 館

Est.1959, disbanded during CR, resumed operations in 1979. 1990: 8,753 juan of archives and 4,955 ce of printed materials. They include documents from party and government organizations; technical and account archives; photos, tapes and seals. Also included are religious records on the appointment of local religious leaders by the Banchan lama in Tibet, republican appointments of local leaders, and documents establishing borders. Current archives are from the local administration, including Cultural Revolution archives and archives on defining the border with Qinghai and neighboring counties. ZHANGYE CITY ARCHIVES <弓 長 > 掖 市 檔 案 館

Est.1958, seriously damaged during CR, resumed operations in 1973. 1990: 34,519 juan in 115 quanzong; plus 5,865 ce of printed materials. The main collection consists of 28,000 juan of documentary archives, including records from temporary units for political movements (committees on land reform, investigation of cadres' personal histories, anti-rightist movement, Four Clean-ups, Socialist Education, Cultural Revolution), and from qu, xiang and communes. There are also 284 dossiers of technical archives and 269 juan of account archives. During CR, the documents from the central, provincial, and prefectural committees and governments from before 1964 were destroyed or sold as waste paper, 4,508 juan in all. In 1968, 270 juan in 14 quanzong of republican archives were transferred to the prefectural revolutionary committee and are now kept in the prefectural archives. Catalogues. Open. ZHUONI COUNTY ARCHIVES 卓 尼 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1964, ceased functions during CR, resumed operations in 1975. 1990: 4,218 juan in 8 sections; 1,807 ce of printed materials. The archives include account books and lists of property and historical relics of the Chanding Temple, and land purchase and sale records from the Qing and republican periods; photos concerning the activities of local elites and the KMT government officials; and documents from the CCP county committee, government, their subordinate offices, mass associations and temporary organizations. The printed materials contain local publications, newspapers, gazetteers and books. They also keep one issue of American geography in which Lock Joseph, an American geographer, wrote an article with some photos about Zhuoni in the 1920s.

GUANGDONG PROVINCE

CHENGHAI COUNTY ARCHIVES 澄 海 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1959, disbanded during CR and suffered from serious loss of archives, restored in 1979. 1985: 11,841 juan/ce, including 6,897 juan of PRC documentary archives; 1,215 juan/ce of archives on technology, maps, census, industrial surveys, soil surveys, land and house property certificates, and deceased cadres; also 3,729 juan/ce of printed materials. In 1958, the republican era archives were transferred to the Public Security Bureau, and 1,118 juan of these archives remain in the bureau’s collection. Open.

FENGSHUN COUNTY ARCHIVES 豐 順 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1961, disbanded during CR with serious loss of archives, restored in 1978. 1987: 12,435 juan/ce in 53 quanzong. In 1949, roughly 2,000 items of republican government archives were taken over, and turned over to the Public Security Bureau. Open.

FOSHAN CITY ARCHIVES 佛 山 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1958; disbanded during CR and its function transferred to Archive Office of the Foshan Revolutionary Committee. In 1984, the former city archives and the prefectural archives were merged into today’s city archives. Current holdings: 42,832 juan in 107 quanzong, including 8,949 ce of printed materials; among the archives, 17 juan of revolutionary history archives are on the Pearl River guerillas ( 珠 江 縱 隊 ) during the anti Japanese war; 161 juan of fragmentary republican archives from the Foshan town government are now kept in the Nanhai County Archives. During the CR, the archives was attacked and 675 juan of archives and materials were stolen, of which 108 juan have never been recovered. About 89% and 61% of the original archives kept in the former city archives and in the formal district archives were eliminated as part of "war preparations." Catalogues. Open.

HUA COUNTY ARCHIVES 花 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1959, stopped work for a while during CR. 1993: 16,792 juan in 59 quanzong, including 14,298 juan of documentary archives, 81 juan of technical archives, 2,413 juan of special archives, photos; plus 6,089 ce of printed materials. The archives had collected and catalogued 408 juan of Qing and republican archives before the 1970s, and turned them over to the Guangzhou Revolutionary Committee and the Hua County Revolutionary Committee during the CR. In 1991, the archives catalogued 15 juan republican archives from fragmentary documents of 1941-1949. There were also 150 archives countywide holding 152,278 juan of archives.

HUAIJI COUNTY ARCHIVES 懷 集 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1958. Holdings: 11,436 juan in 33 quanzong, including 1,397 juan of special archives, 212 juan of technical archives; 5,219 ce of printed materials. Catalogues. Open.

Republican archives: 4,026 juan, mostly records from the KMT county committee, government, assembly, Youth Corps, court and police. The contents cover politics, military affairs, economy, education, and land tax. Also materials such as gazetteers, yearbooks, and newspapers.

Contemporary archives: the documentary archives come from the county committee, government, their subordinate offices, xiang and zhen. The technical archives include information on major construction projects, agriculture, forestry and mineral resources, and local products. The special archives contain land and house property certificates, census records, and archives of deceased cadres.

Est. 1959. In 1967 Red Guards broke into the archives and stole records which have yet to be recovered. As part of effort for war preparation, nearly 2,000 juan of archives were burned in 1970, though archives staff managed to conceal and save some records. 1991: 15,618 juan of archives. There were 101,713 juan/ce of archives and printed materials countywide, including 2,198 juan of republican archives, 25,369 juan of documentary archives, 51,149 juan of special archives, 1,590 juan of technical archives and 22,589 juan of account archives, also 7,090 ce of printed materials. Est. 1961, stopped work during CR, resumed operations in 1978. As part of effort for war preparation, 6,304 juan of archives were destroyed in 1971, representing over 86 percent of the total holdings. 1990: 15,800 juan of archives and printed materials. There were also 118 archive offices in xiang, zhen and county-level offices holding 92,200 juan of archives and materials. Old regime archives were taken over by the Public Security Bureau in 1949, then transferred to the archives in 1983 and organized into 4,233 juan. Open.

In 1959, there were 10,500 juan of archives in total but over half of them were burned due to "war preparation" in 1970, and only 4200 juan survived. ANLONG COUNTY ARCHIVES 安 龍 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1959. 1989: 31,315 juan in 118 quanzong; 8,300 ce of printed materials. (DAGZ reports higher figures for 1985: 34,906 juan and 10,076 ce respectively.) The collections include 18,891 juan of republican archives in 14 quanzong, 9,569 juan of documentary archives, 2,855 juan of special archives, photos. The republican archives seem to be KMT party and government archives initially held by the Public Security Bureau, plus additional items donated as a result of an aggressive acquisition program. ANSHUN CITY ARCHIVES 安 順 市 檔 案 館

Est. 1960. 1990: 60,000 juan/ce of archives and printed materials in 133 quanzong, including 40,000 juan of archives. In 1949 the last KMT magistrate destroyed most of the archives before fleeing; but in 1955 a small group was formed to collect and organize KMT political archives. By 1956 it has collected 237 juan of political archives, 465 juan of administrative records, and 1,262 copies of political publications. These were all transferred to the Public Security Bureau for safe-keeping; and in 1982 they were reorganized into 706 juan (ce) and transferred to the county archives. In 1987, 45 folders of republican era court cases were turned over to the archives, and organized into 274 juan. This brought the total republican era archives and materials to 1,020 juan/ce. In 1987, 18,717 juan of historical archives and 8,520 ce of historical materials were opened to the public (numbers which suggest the opening of many PRC archives). CENGONG COUNTY ARCHIVES 岑 鞏 縣 檔 案 館

Est. 1961, stopped work during CR, resumed operations in 1975. 1988: 20,175 juan, including 12,416 juan of republican archives; 5,303 ce of printed materials. In 1950, a team uncovered 9399 juan of archives that the GMD had hidden, and these were transferred to the Public Security Bureau in 1955. In 1984, 12,195 juan of republican archives were transferred to the archives from the Public Security Bureau. The contemporary archives came from the county committee, government and their subordinate offices. 1099 juan were transferred from Zhenyuan (鎮 遠 ) county when a portion of its territory was transferred to Cengong. Est. 1959, disbanded in 1962, restored in 1980. 1985: 55 quanzong, including 22,665 juan of documentary archives, 17 juan of technical archives, 86 juan of special archives, 4 juan videotapes; 5,372 ce of printed materials. The fragmentary and poorly organized records from the KMT era government, party, assembly, militia, court, Youth Corps, Chamber of Commerce and middle school have been collected and catalogued into 13,826 juan. The PRC archives are from the county government and its subordinate offices and cover public health, public security, finance, propaganda, census, political movements and personnel. The holding of republican archives is the greatest in Bijie (畢 節 )Prefecture and ranked top 6 in Guizhou Province, mostly documents and materials from county committee, government, Youth Corps, local court, land and grain office from 1931 to 1949. They numbered over 15,000 juan when taken over by the Public Security Bureau in December 1949. The archives received them from Public Security in 1983-84. The contemporary archives include documentary, technical, financial, and special archives, photos and tapes. Open.

The materials include gazetteers, historical materials, local newspapers, surveys of minority peoples and records of American military criminal behavior in 1944. 1990: 27,526 juan in 74 quanzong, including 79 juan of revolutionary history archives, from 1940 to 1949, on land reform, tax and interest reduction, production movement, suppression of traitors, finance, industry and education; also publications and party membership lists. The contemporary archives include 22,115 juan of documentary archives from the county committee, government administration, mass organizations and enterprises; also 5,411 juan of special archives, photos. Est. 1958, suffered serious damage during CR. 1990: 10,151 juan in 56 quanzong, including 18 juan of revolutionary archives from the CCP county committee and government of 1945-49, covering organization, propaganda, education, struggles against the enemy, land reform and finances; 9550 juan of PRC documentary archives, 10 juan of technical archives, 573 juan of account archives, and photos. Gazetteers include Yongping fuzhi from the Guangxu period and Changli xianzhi from the republican period. Printed materials: 4,906 ce. There were also 114 archives offices countywide holding 17,000 juan in 1985.

Old regime archives: 20 juan in 1 quanzong.

Revolutionary history archives: 26 juan in 1 quanzong. From Daming county committee, government and their subordinate departments from 1927 to 1949; summaries, reports, plans, bulletins, orders, statistics, records on organization, propaganda, armed force, civil affairs, finance and taxes, banking, public security, education, land reform, party construction and agricultural production.

Contemporary archives: 14,526 juan in 108 quanzong, from county committee, government, congress, their subordinate offices, mass associations, communes and disbanded units. The contents include policy, regulations, documents from political movements, meeting minutes, speeches, records, certificates of land and house property, etc..

Printed materials: 5,684 ce, including gazetteers, books, compilation of documents, newspapers and periodicals and other materials.

Est. 1959. 1985: 24,588 juan / ce of archives and printed materials, including revolutionary history archives from 1944 to 1949. There are no Qing archives left, and the republican archives of Fengning county are now found in the Shenyang Archives and the Second Historical Achives of China. The local Manchukuo archives are scattered in Jilin, Changchun and Harbin archives; only few volumes of pre-1949 archives remain in the archives. The PRC archives are from the county CCP committee, government and its subordinate offices. There are also archives on science and technology, account, education, name of places, and photos. Open.
