The index section is organized along the categories of the Siku quanshu: classics, histories, philosophy, and belles-lettres. Still valuable as an introduction to the key references on Qing and earlier Chinese history.

Through the 1991 volume of the printed version (published in 1997, covering titles published in 1991), the annual volumes of the BAS included citations to Western-language periodical articles, individually authored monographs, chapters in edited volumes, conference proceedings, anthologies, festschriften, etc. Since 1992, newly published individual monographs are no longer being added to the database. The 1992 annual volume will not be published in print form. This service is available only through institutional subscription. People associated with the University of California can access it through their UC Internet accounts. Others should check with their institutions.

An extremely complete and useful bibliography of Western literature on all aspects of Chinese religion. Basically divided into sections on Chinese Buddhism and all other Chinese religions—though Christianity and Islam are not included in the latter. Within each section, titles are arranged topically, with subject headings ranging from Art and Symbolism, to Ethics and Practice, State and Religion, Taoist Sects, Divination, Rites and Ceremonies, Magic and Sorcery, and Religion under Communism. The Buddhist section includes extensive sections on Art and Iconography, Caves and Mountains, Schools, Ch'an and Popular Buddhism. The range, accordingly, is from textual to aesthetic to anthropological approaches to Chinese religion. Also includes author index.

This is a beautifully organized book. Included within its summary of Labor history are numerated references to the Hoover collection. You can also find references under publication types by following marginal notations. The title here is somewhat misleading. This is not a dictionary to archival documents, but an annotated bibliography of published source materials. It provides a very useful guide to archival and original source materials compiled and published during the period from pre-Qin dynasty to 1990. The 3,985 entries are organized into several periodization: from pre-Qin to Han, Three kingdom to Tang, Song-Yuan, Ming, Qing, ROC and PRC. Each entry provides title, authors, press, date and place, volume and a useful abstract of the archival material included.

This guide includes more than 2,500 reference books on Chinese history published in Chinese (including PRC, Taiwan and Hong Kong publications), Russian, Japanese and Western languages. Divided into general history, dynasty history and special research fields, it contains bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedia, digests, calenders, maps and other reference information in each part, with annotations to many reference books. It also has a title index. Very useful.

A very useful guide to reference books. It includes over 2,800 reference books on Chinese studies published in Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and other areas (except the Chinese Mainland) during the years 1948-1983. Divided into sections on bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedia, yearbooks, biographical references, law and statistics, and handbooks, this guide gives critical annotations to nearly 1,000 reference books which the author considers important. It also has title and author indexes. Very useful for non-PRC publications.

Invaluable bibliography of post-1949 published materials on each locality. Most of these at the county level seem to be compiled by the county party committee and only circulated within local areas. It includes over 5,900 entries. Each entry has title, publisher, circulation and frequency. Organized by province, with title index.
The very beginning also includes a bibliography of national level publications of history and gazetteers.

This is one of the most important bibliographies of articles compiled by Chinese scholars since 1949. It has three sections (bian). The first includes to volumes (juan) with over 30,000 historical articles selected from more than 1,300 journals, periodicals and newspapers published between 1900 and 1937 in China. The second section (also in two volumes) includes over 30,000 historical articles published between 1937-1949. The third section (3 volumes) includes more than 40,000 historical articles published in China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) between 1949-1976. It is arranged according to a pattern generally accepted within China: begins with Marxist historical theory and method, then in turn general history (historical periodization, dynastic system, cultural legacy, and capitalist sprouts), dynastic history, minority history, peasant uprising history, diplomatic history, evaluation of historical figures and their biographies, archaeology and material culture (vol.1); topical history: economic, political, military, social life and problem, thought, religion, culture and education, language, literature, art, science, historical geography, local history, and historiography (vol.2). Articles published during Cultural Revolution are grouped into a separate part and arranged according to their dates of publication. (vol.3).
